80 maunds of BRRI Dhan-29 harvested per acre in Lalmonirhat

Farmers of Panbari Block in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district have harvested a record yield of 80 maunds seeds of BRRI Dhan-29 variety per acre during this Boro season.

Officials said this while talking to BSS after a crop cutting ceremony of the paddy seeds on the field of farmer Quasem Ali in the area.

A farmers' field day was organised by Patgram Upazila Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) under its Increasing Paddy Production Action Plan. Upazila Agriculture Officer Hamidur Rahman was the chief guest and farmer Sirajul Haque presided over the function.

Agriculture Extension Officer Ekramul Haque, farmer Solaiman Ali, UP member Shafiul Islam and Marketing Officer of Agro-Chemicals Monwar Hossain, among others, addressed the function.

They said both the government and the private sector should come forward to help increase production of all crops and high quality seeds including the paddy seeds throughout the country to meet the local demands.

Later, experts present on the occasion explained the detailed process and technology of producing high quality BRRI Dhan-29 paddy and its seeds to the farmers.

H.S.C. exam passes peacefully in N’ganj

The first day of the Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent Alim- Fazil and vocational examination under Dhaka Board 2008 passed off peacefully and in a copying free atmosphere in the district on Thursday.

District examination control room sources said no one was expelled on the day for adopting unfair means from any 15 centres of the district.

A total of 8195 candidates, of whom HSC - 7179, Alim-Fazil - 601 and vocational - 415 candidates, are now appearing in the H.S.C examination.

English first paper for H.S.C. Quran Mazid-for Alim Fazil, and English and Accountancy for Vocational examination were held today.

Five vigilance teams comprising U.N.O and district education officer were formed to ensure peaceful examination and 144 was imposed within the examination centres and each centre was under the supervision of the magistrate.

Deputy commissioner A.M.A. Rehman told BSS that stern action would be taken against those students found guilty of copying in the examination halls.

He said action would also be taken against the teachers found assisting the students in copying.

43 arrested on various charges in two districts

A total of 26 persons including three women drug peddlers were arrested and 19 bottles of phensidyl and one kg of ganja recovered from their possession by the police on Monday from four upazilas of the district.

The other arrested persons were dacoits, robbers and absconders of different criminal cases pending with the courts. Police said of the total persons arrested four from Chuadanga sadar upazila, five from Jibannagar upazila, 16 from Damurhuda upazila and one person from Alamdanga upazila.

The arrested three drug peddlers were Sokina Khatun ,40, Mahrun Khatun,40 and Rokeya Khatun, 35.

BSS, Sirajganj adds: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a special drive arrested 17 people on various charges and drug trading from different places of the district town on Tuesday.

RAB said, the arrested drug peddlers are Abdul Mazid, 57, Mamun,19, Jahangir Alam, 28, Manir Shiekh, 42, Hanif, 23, Al Amin, 24, Anwar, 25, Tukka Shiekh, 49, Sujab Ali, 37, Jahid, 30, Hasinur, 55, Bachhu Sheikh, 45, Atiqul,42 and Nurul Huda.

Besides, Kamal Uddin, 26 and Hamidul,42 were arrested for alleged involving stealing of mobile set while absconding accused Sanowar Hossain was arrested. Later, the arrested were handed over to Sadar thana.

Arms, ammunition seized in Dinajpur

Police in a raid seized arms and ammunition from Chirirbandar upazila in the district on Wednesday.

Police sources said, acting on a tip-off, police raided the house of one Shahin, 25, at Daulatpur village under Puntree union and recovered a revolver and three bullets from a wooden box.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the owner of the house escaped the scene.An arms case was filed accusing Shahin with the concerned police station.

Fugitive arrested in Rajbari

Police arrested an absconding convict at Basakustia village under Kalimaher union under Pangsha upazila of the district on Monday night. The arrested person was identified as Meher Ali,35, son of Ziarat Ali.

Police said Meher Ali was sentenced to five years imprisonment in abstentia in a robbery case. Acting on a secret information a team of police from Pangsha thana raided his house and arrested him. Police sent him to Rajbari jail hajat.

Number of voters reduced in Natore

The number of voters has been reduced in the district according to data collected for preparing voter list and national identity cards. District election office sources said the number of voters in the district as per the voter list prepared in 2006 was 11,37,769 while the present number of voters stood at 9,94,024.

The preliminary voter list is being displayed at the concerned upazila election offices, pourasabhas and union parishad offices which will be continued till June 15. Revision of the voter list is being done simultaneously.

Call to build bridge over Kholisha Danga river in Baraigram

Hundreds of people have been suffering for want of a bridge over the Kholisha Danga river at Dausin ghat under Baraigram Upazila in Natore district.

There is a six kilometre long Katcha road from Dasgram pacca road to Darikhoir pacca road. High school, primary school, market, Eidgah are established beside the road.

There is a river named Kholisha Danga passing through the area. People have to cross the river daily in a difficult condition. On the east bank of the river there is a High School and on the west bank of the river, there is a Darikhoir Government Primary School. Local people make a bamboo bridge every year in dry season over the river. But in the rainy season, people cross the river by boat. Women, children, old men, girl students feel very difficult to cross the river.

In this regard the Government and the Administration should take steps to build a bridge over the Kholisha Danga river at Dausin ghat.

Extended meeting of Gopalganj AL held

A day-long meeting of the Gopalganj District Awami League was held at Gopalganj district Awami League office recently.

Mohammad Ali Khan Abu Mia, President, Gopalganj DXistrict Awami League and former chairman of Gopalganj Pourashava presided over the meeting.

Advocate Kazi Abdur Rashid, former MP, was present as chief guest.

The meeting was addressed, among others, by Emdadul Haque Chowdhury, general secretary of the district Awami League, Advocate Idris Ali Molla, vice-president of district Awami League, Noor Mohammad Dulu vice president of district Awami League, Mohabub Ali Khan, joint secretary, Gopalganj district Awami League, S.M. Yousuf Ali, president, Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Awami League, Salauddin Panno and S.M. Akkas Ali including presidents and general secretaries of the different upazilas and Pourashavas.

The meeting demanded release of the Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina including other leaders from the jail.

Physensidyl recovered in Benapole

Members of Bangladesh Rifles seized 355 bottles of phyensidyl from Ghirkri Ballala under Benapole thana on May 22.

Official sources said, acting on a tip off, BDR personnel raided the area and recovered the phensidyl as an abandoned condition.

Sensing the presence of the border guards the drug traders managed to escape the scene.

Schoolboy killed in Barguna road accident

BARGUNA May 22: A school student was killed in a road accident near Ghatkhali Bridge on Amtali-Patuakhali highway on Thursday morning. The dead was identified as Noman, 9, son of Abdus Sattar Howladar of Ghatkhali village under Amtali upazila. Police said the accident took place when a Kushtia bound BRTC bus ran over Noman near Ghatkhali Bridge while he was crossing the road. Police sent the body to Barguna hospital morgue for postmortem, report BSS.



Football training held in Ujirpur

BARISAL, May 28: A 21-day long training on football for the school students of Ujirpur upazila of this district was concluded here on Tuesday. Presided over by the district sports officer Md. Humayun Kabir, the concluding function was attended by UNO Md. Abdul Malek as chief guest. Ujirpur upazila sports association's secretary Anwar Hossain Nantu gave training to the students in the field of Ujirpur school. The chief guest gave away the certificates among the participants. A total of 25 school students of Ujirpur upazila took part in the Training, report BSS.



Youth killed in Satkhira

SATKHIRA, May 29: A youth was killed as he fell from the roof of a running bus on Satkhira-Ashashuni road in the district on Wednesday. The dead was identified as Faruq Hossain, 28, of Kapsonda village under Ashashuni upazila. Police sources said Faruq was traveling by the bus sitting on the roof of the Satkhira bound bus from Chapra. Suddenly he fell down as a hanging wire entangled in his neck. He died on the spot. A case was filed with concerned police station in this connection, report BSS.



Swimming competition held in Chandpur

CHANDPUR, May 28: A two-day Chittagong Divisional Swimming Competition held on Sunday and Monday at Chandpur Arun Nandi Swimming Pool with great enthusiasm. The swimming competition was inaugurated by Hossain Zamil, Chittagong divisional commissioner. 64 swimmers of eleven districts and four clubs of Chittagong division took part in 14 events of the competition, report BSS.
