One gets life, 7 others 5-yr RI on various charges in Barisal

Two trial courts in Barisal on Wednesday afternoon announcing verdicts in two separate cases sentenced one accused to life imprisonment for drug peddling and seven accused to five years rigorous imprisonments for toll collection.

Court sources said Md. Shahidullah district and session judge of Barisal sentenced accused Khalilur Rahman to life imprisonment and acquitted other two accused Rafikul Islam and Kamrul Islam in a case of drug peddling.

Those three accused were travelling on a night coach of G M Paribahon plying on Benapole-Barisal route and arrested with 40 grams heroin worth Tk. 4 lakhs in a check post at Torki under Gournadi police station of Barisal district on Barisal-Faridpur highway on September 2, 2007 late night.

Sub Inspector Delwar Hossain investigating the case filed charge sheet against three accused on September 30, 2007 and the court handed down the verdict in presence of the all of three accused after examining eight witnesses.

In another case Siddikul Arefin Chowdhury, first additional district and session judge of Barisal, sentenced each of the seven absconding accused Angur Khan,Awal Khan, Altaf Khan, Abdus Salam, Zahangir Hossain, Abdul Halim Talukdar and Ali Hossain, to five years rigorous imprisonment with per head Tk. 1000 fine or to suffer more one year RI in default.

Prosecution story in brief was the accused demanded Tk.one lakh as toll from Zamila Khatun of Madarkati village under Banaripara upazila of Barisal district and when Zamila refused to pay the toll the miscreants attacking his house looted Tk.38 thousand on February 24, 1998 night.

Golam Mustafa Dulal, son of Zamila, lodged a case in this connection with Banaripara police station on next day and Sub Inspector Yusuf Ali, filed charge against those seven accused on August 31, 1998.

The court announced the verdict after examining 11 witnesses in absentia of the absconding accused.

Call to develop skill of journalists

A week-long workshop aimed at developing the skills of local journalists was inaugurated at the Mymensingh Press Club on May 11 with Mubarak Hossain, Programme Officer of Mass Line Media Centre in the chair. Mass Line Media Centre (MMC) with assistance from CARITAS, Switzerland organised the programme.

Theofil Nokrek, Regional Director, CARITAS inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest while Zia Uddin Ahmed, Vice President of Mymensingh Press Club, Zillur Rahman Khan, Bureau Chief of Sangbad, Fazlur Rahman Siddiquee of News Today, Syed Reazul Haque and Sharmin Akhtar Sagari of MMC addressed the inaugural session. Twenty journalists including two women journalist from Mymensingh, Netrakona, Jamalpur, Tangail, Kishoreganj and Sherpur districts were participating in the workshop titled skill development and Motivational Training for reporters/correspondents.

Birshreshta Mohiuddin Museum to be inaugurated on May 21

Construction works of Birshrestho Mohiuddin Jahangir memorial museum has been completed at Rahimganj village of Babuganj upazila under Barisal district.

Parvin Akter, chief executive officer of Barisal district council, said the construction work at the cost of Tk. 62.90 lakhs completed and would be inaugurated on May 21, 2008 and the village would be officially named as Jahangir Nagor.

Anwarul Iqbal, advisor for local government, rural development and cooperative, would be the chief guest of the inauguration ceremony to be held at that premises.

She said under the project of construction of seven memorial museums of seven Birshreshtho, the warriors of liberation war, has been started country wide a time at the birth places of those immortal freedom fighters.

Under that project Barisal district council is supervised the construction works of a one storied building for museum attached with a library at Jahangir Nagor, the native village Rahimganj named after Birshrestho Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, she added.

Prices of vegetables down in Narsingdi

Prices of summer vegetables have marked fall as the supply of vegetables in the markets of the district is sufficient.

Farmers of the district have achieved satisfactory yield of various vegetables due to favourable climatic condition and adoption of modern technology. Market sources said lady's finger and cucumber are being sold at Taka 8 to 10 per kg, brinjal, jhinga and potol at Taka 12 to 15 per kg, Kakrol, korola and borboti are being sold at Taka 10 to 12 per kg, green chilli is being sold at Taka 15 per kg.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Mokhlesur Rahman told BSS that the DAE had fixed to bring 5,200 hectares of land under vegetable cultivation in the district with a production target of 52,500 tons of vegetables. But the farmers of the district brought 55,400 hectares of land under vegetable cultivation this season, he added.

Workshop on news presentation at TI in Ctg May 22

A daylong workshop on Television Reporting and News presentation will be held at Theatre Institute (TI) in the port city on May 22.

Communia, an organisation of the student of Communication and journalism Department at Chittagong University (CU), will be hosting the workshop for the first time in Chittagong region.

Eminent News presenters and Television reporters are expected to deliver lecture at the workshop. The organisers of the workshop are seeking participation to the ex-students and present students of the Communication and Journalism Department at CU and requesting all to collect from for joining it.

Women Cadet College demanded at Rajshahi

A group of employee of Rajshahi University (RU) led by senior deputy director of Munnuzan hall Roksana begum Tuktuki formed a human chain at Rajshahi university campus on Tuesday demanding establish women Cadet College at Rajshahi.

The programme was continued to 12 pm from 11.30 pm. Speakers demanded to the caretaker Govt. taking initiatives as soon as possible to establish women cadet college at Rajshahi.

Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Mymensingh Dr Mosharraf Hossain Meah highly lauded the contributions of Public-Relations officers in brightening the image of the University.

He said this while addressing the farewell reception accorded to the retired officials and employees of Public Relations and Publication Department of the University on Tuesday last as the chief guest.

In his speech he stressed on food security to challenge the food crisis. The reception was addressed, among others, by Md Nazibur Rahman, Registrar of BAU as special guest, Aftab Uddin Ahmed, Additional Registrar of the VC's Secretariat, Nawab Ali, Habibur Rahman with Dewan Rashidul Hassans Director, Public Relation, and Publication Department of the University in the chair.

RAB seizes huge wine in Ctg

Members RAB in a drive seized 174 bottles of wine from Duthkomra area in Anwara, recently. Sources said that acting on tip a squad of the RAB-7 raided a house at Duthkomra area at about 2:00 p.m. and seized 174 bottles of wine from there. Sensing the presence of RAB, the alleged smugglers fled the scene.

None could be arrest about this incident and a case was recorded with Anwara police station in this regard.

Construction work of 398 cyclone shelters to begin in August

BARISAL, May 16: Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will start construction work of 398 cyclone shelters in 12 Sidr-hit districts in August at a cost Tk 571 crore. According to the Barisal divisional LGED office, 77 shelters will be built in Barisal, 67 in Barguna, 10 in Bhola, 70 in Patuakhali, 54 in Pirojpur, 24 in Madaripur, 31 in Shariatpur, 12 in Chandpur, 40 in Bagerhat, six in Gopalganj, two in Khulna and five in Satkhira districts. Nurul Islam, additional chief engineer of LGED, said that 11 donor agencies will provide funds for the project, which will be completed by next two years, reports UNB.



One killed by 'Aggyan party’ in Bharab

BHAIRAB (KISHOREGANJ), May 16: A bus passenger was killed allegedly by 'Aggyan party' (doping party) members in the upazila on Friday. Local people said the unidentified passenger of Mymensingh-bound bus coming from Chittagong became unconscious in the bus at about 5pm. Other passengers of the bus asked its driver to halt the bus and caught one Sohel from the bus suspecting him a member of the doping party. Later, the bus came to the RAB camp of the upazila and handed over Sohel to the elite force. The sick passenger was admitted to Bhairab Health Complex where he died later, reports UNB.



2 fake army men held

BRAHMANBARIA, May 16: local people caught a fake army major and a captain from Haripur village in Akhaura upazila Thursday. Police said three young men went to the house of C&F agent of Akhaura Land Port Abbas Uddin and demanded money after introducing themselves as army officers. Of the three, Abu Bakkar Siddique introduced himself as a major while Salauddin as a captain. On suspicion, Abbas with the help of local people caught Abu Bakkar and Salauddin and after a good beating handed them over to the police. Another young man, however, managed to flee the scene. A case was filed, reports UNB.



Woman killed in Madaripur clash

Madaripur, May 16: A woman seriously injured in a clash at Char Dattapara in Shibchar upazila Saturday died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital Sunday. The dead was identified as Sufiya Begum, 50, wife of Majid Talukder. Sources said six people, including Sufiya Begum, were injured in a clash between Majid Talukder and his brother Rahim Talukder over harvesting paddy from a field on Saturday. Sufiya succumbed to her injuries at Faridpur Medical College Hospital the following day. A case was filed, reports UNB.



One killed in Narsingdi clash

NARSINGDI, May 16: A young man was killed and 20 others were injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups at remote Kacharikandi village in Raipura upazila here Sunday morning. The deceased was identified as Jalaluddin, 26, son of Shahidullah of the village. Police quoting local people said there was a longstanding dispute between Ismail Member and Shahidullah over establishing supremacy in the village, reports UNB.



Valuables looted

Comilla, May 16: Dacoits looted valuables worth about Tk 10 lakh from six houses at Elahabad village in Debiwar upazila Monday injuring 10 people. Police said a gang of 25/30 armed robbers swooped on the houses of Khaleq, Kabir, Hasnat, Mariam, Acchia and Monir and looted valuables at gun point four about an hour. As the inmates resisted the robbers, they beat them up injuring 10 people. Seven of the injured were admitted to upazila health complex Medical College Hospital, reports UNB.
