News Briefs 17 shops gutted in Gopalganj GOPALGANJ, May 15: At least 20 people were injured and 17 shops gutted in a fire at Ramshil Bazar in Kotalipara upazila on Sunday night. Witnesses said the fire originated in the grocery shop of Somir Mallik at about 11.30pm and soon engulfed the other adjacent shops. The fire might be erupted in the shop from the mosquito coil or cigarette, the sources said. At least 20 people were injured when they went to put out the blaze. The extent of loss caused by the fire was estimated at Tk 25 lakh, the sources said, reports UNB. Youth slaughtered in Sirajganj SIRAJGANJ, May 15: A young man was hacked and slaughtered by unidentified assailants at Sayedabad Punarbashan area near Jamuna Bridge western side Monday midnight. On information, police recovered the body of Abuhan, 20, from Block-B of the Punarbashan area Tuesday morning. Reason behind the killing could not be known immediately. A case was filed with the local thana, reports UNB. Terrorist killed in shootout with RAB in Jhenidah JHENIDAH, May 15: A terrorist was killed in a shootout between RAB and his cohorts at Modhupur village in Sadar upazila early Tuesday. The dead was identified as Shahin, 27, son of Mahbub Alam of the village. He was wanted in eight cases, including of murder. RAB sources said on information they encircled Modhupur field at about 4am when a group of terrorists were holding a meeting. Sensing the presence of elite force, the terrorists opened fire on them. In retaliation, the RAB members also fired back that led to a half-an-hour long gunfight, leaving Shahin dead on the spot. After the shooting, the elite force recovered four firearms-two light guns (LG), one pipe gun and one revolver-and eight bullets from the spot, reports UNB.
