Social movement a must to build up drug-free society

The speakers at the meeting stressed the need for making social movement against drugs to save the young generation and to build up a drug free society.
They said this in an opinion exchange meeting on "the role of doctors and NGO workers to build up drug free society" organized by a local NGO at the auditorium of public library and club of the town here on May 12, sources said.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abu Muhammad Yousuf addressed the meeting as chief guest. Presided over by Advocate Shafiqur Rahman, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Civil Surgeon Dr. M. Shamsul Haque, Kazi Aminul Islam Faku, Joynul Abedin and Shah Alam.
The deputy commissioner in his speech said the young generation is the asset of the country but they are addicted to drugs due to various reasons and creating problems in the families and in the society.
He also said to form an anti drug committee in the district with the leaders of different professional groups.
A large number of people from all walks of life attended the meeting.
398 cyclone shelters to be constructed in Barisal

Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) will construct as many as 398 cyclone shelter centres in 12 natural calamity prone districts of the southern region of the country.
Official sources said, the centres will be constructed involving Taka 571 crore under a project 'PEDP-11' in the next fiscal.
There will be a provision of government primary school each at all the centres. The construction work of the shelter centres will be started in August for 2008-2009 fiscal.
Meanwhile, tenders have been floated through different national dailies for construction of 180 cyclone shelters in the first phase.
Of the total centres, 77 will be constructed in Barisal district, 67 in Barguna district, 10 in Bhola district, 70 in Patuakhali district, 54 in Pirojpur district, 24 in Madaripur district, 31 in Shariatpur district, six in Gopalgonj district, 12 in Chandpur district, two in Khulna district, 40 in Bagerhat district and five in Satkhira district.
As many as 11 donor countries have been financing for the projects, the sources added.
Talking to BSS, Additional Chief Engineer of LGED Nurul Islam said this project is being implemented considering the destruction of recent cyclone Sidr.
The works of the project, he said, would be completed within next two years.
Besides, a number of cyclone shelter centres would also be constructed under the financial assistance of Japan and World Bank in this region, the sources added.
RESCU distributes sanitary materials in Rangpur

Rural Economic Support and Care for the Under-privileged (RESCU) distributed sanitary materials among the distressed and poor families of Gopalpur Union Parishad under Badarganj upazila here today.
The sanitary materials were distributed among 37 distressed families of the UP under the financial assistance of the NGO Foundation with view to accelerate the ongoing sanitation programme of the government.
Gopalpur UP chairman chaired a simple ceremony organised on the occasion at the UP Complex premises that was attended by Chairman of RESCU Prof Mahbubur Rahman Belal as the chief guest.
Vice-chairman of RESCU, Dr M Azahar Ali, its Executive Director M Fazlul Haque, Director Shah Alam, Prof Anowarul Islam, female UP member Shahnaz Parveen and Gopalpur Branch manager of RESCU Jahangir Alam were present. While addressing the occasion, the speakers urged the local people in creating public awareness about usage of sanitary latrines, safe drinking waters and to follow the hygienic rules for a better and disease-free life.
RU ICS activist beaten by JCD cadres

Jayatabadi Chhatra Dal(JCD) cadres of Rajshahi University (RU) beat up an Islamic Chhatra Shibir(ICS) RU unit activists named M Jakaria Alam on Monday while he was going out after finishing his class at Shahidullah Art Bhaban.
Jakaria, a third year student of Islamic History and Culture department in his complain mentioned that a group of Chhatra Dal cadres led by Selim in association with Sher-e-Bangla hall convener of JCD Ashiq, Mokut, Shamim and Rana rushed to the Shahidullah Art Bhaban and beat up him .
Jakaria met with university Proctor Enamul Haque at his office and demanded immediate ensure security inside the Campus. The ICS RU unit leaders and activities urged university proctor to immediate ensure Jakaria's security and demanded exemplary punishment to the responsible JCD cadres.
Vitamin A plus campaign held in Jamalpur

National Vitamin A plus Campaign- 2008 was observed in the district by administering vitamin A and anit-worm tablets to the children as elsewhere in the country on Saturday.
During the campaign 3,45,047 children aged between 1 to 5 years were administered vitamin A capsule and 2,88,075 children aged between 2 to 5 years were administered anti- worm tablets in the district.
Decomposed body of a youth recovered in Ctg
BSS, Chittagong
Police recovered a decomposed body of a youth from a graveyard at Dashpara in Dhalghat under Patiya upazila in the district on Monday.
The body was identified as Ranjit Dev alias Laltu Dev, 25, son of Prodip Dev of Dashpara of Patiya. Police said Ranjit, an employee of a private firm was missing since Saturday. His family was unaware about his whereabouts.
On information, police recovered the body. The body was marked with injury and an ear of the victim was cut off.
Reasons behind the killing could not be ascertain immediately.
The body was sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed with Patiya police in this connection.
Farmer electrocuted in Brahmanbaria

A farmer was electrocuted at Mogra Union under Akhaura upazila of the district on Tuesday.
Police said, the victim was identified as Zaher Mia,35, son of Late Abu Mia of Mogra Union under Akhaura upazila. Local people said, Zaher was electrocuted when he tried to start the irrigation machine near his house.
He died on the way to Akhaura Health Complex.
Minor girl escapes marriage in Kawnia
BSS, Rangpur
A minor girl escaped from marriage at the intervention of upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Kawnia upazila in the district on Sunday.
Locals said parents of both sides had arranged all preparations for the marriage ceremony of adolescent Jasmine Begum, 14, Joynal Abedin of village Hajirbazaar under Pirgachha upazila with Delwar Hossain, 16, son of Mohammad Hanif of nearby Kawnia upazila.
Being informed by the workers of ASOD, an NGO, UNO of Kawnia upazila Zakir Hossain with ASOD workers Shahnaj Parveen and Hasanuzzaman visited the houses of both the girl and boy and talked to their parents. They successfully convinced the parents about the illegal initiative they took and its adverse impacts on both immature husband and wife and asked the parents not to give their girl in marriage with the boy to save their future.
The parents of both sides also made commitments on continuing studies of both the children till they become matured for marriage.
Memorial meet on Barrister Mozammel held at CRP, Savar
A memorial meet on Late Chairman Barrister Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan, was held at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP), Savar on May 10. Miss Valerie Taylor, Founder of CRP and Salam discussed about the untiring effort and contribution of late Chairman for the development of CRP and his other social and philanthropic activities, including establishment of Bhuiyan Academy.
A Milad Mahfil was also held for the salvation of the departed soul, says a press release.
