GATCO graft case: Bhuiyan, Nizami may surrender today

Former secretary general of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami are likely to surrender before the court today (Thursday) in GATCO scam case, informed sources said yesterday. The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday framed charges against 25 people including former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, her son Arafat Rahman Koko, Motiur Rahman Nizami, M Saifur Rahman, Mannan Bhuiyan, M Shamsul Islam, MK Anwar and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.  |
Eight killed in Ashuganj train accident

The death toll in Tuesday night's fatal train accident at Ashuganj rail-station on the Dhaka-Chittagong route rose to 8 with the recovery of two more bodies Wednesday while the injury figure climbed over 50. One of the dead was identified as Tajul Islam, a guard of Noakhali Express, one of two trains that collided in the accident, while the rest could not still be identified. Train communications on Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet routes resumed 11.30am, 11 hours after the late-night tragic accident.  |

Shahjahan Omar jailed for 13 yrs, wife for 3 yrs

A special court yesterday sentenced BNP leader and former state minister for law Barrister Shahjahan Omar to 13 years' imprisonment for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information on his wealth to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Judge Khondker Kamal Uzzaman of the Special Judge Court-9, housed at Jatiya Sangsad Complex, also fined him Tk 10 lakh, in default to suffer one year more in prison. The court also sentenced his wife Mehjabin Farzana to three years' imprisonment for assisting her husband in committing corruption.  |
Anwar Chy pays farewell call on President

Outgoing British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar paid a farewell call on President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban here yesterday. During the meeting, the President expressed his satisfaction over the present bilateral relation between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom (UK), and thanked the outgoing UK envoy for his outstanding performance for further developing and strengthening the ties. Prof Iajuddin said Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relations with the UK and considers it as a dependable trade, development and strategic partner.  |
Countrywide mass hunger strike on May 20: AL to join dialogue only under Hasina’s leadership UNB, Dhaka
Awami League central working committee, the decision-making body, Wednesday decided that the party can only participate in the government-sponsored dialogue along with its president Sheikh Hasina now in jail. The working committee after 2-day deliberations announced mass hunger strike in every district, upazila and union on May 20 to press for releasing Hasina. The party would also form human chain in the capital, but the date has not been fixed. An extended meeting of Awami League will be held on May 26 to discuss the latest development and map out its future action programme.  |
40 pc seats for women in local govt body demanded

The Government should preserve 40 per cent seats for women in local government body to empower them. The constitution of Bangladesh endorses equal rights for women in all spheres of life, said Former Adviser to the Caretaker Government Sultana Kamal, also Executive Director of Ain O Shalish Kendra at a press conference after the National Convention on "Elected Women Representatives of Local Government" organised by Nari Uddog Kendra (NUK) at LGED auditorium yesterday. The contribution of women in social and economical development of the country are noteworthy.  |
For democratic reforms government needs political friends The objective of holding general elections, through the achievement of national consensus on many issues, by the third week of December as spelt out by Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed in his address to the nation on Monday is an expression of intent of the present caretaker government. Through the address the Chief Adviser also announced the introduction of indoor politics all over the country which became effective the following day. Earlier indoor politics was restricted to Dhaka city alone.  |
