Poor traffic management

In general Dhaka City has a very poor traffic management system. By standard count it is too weak and almost dysfunctional in operation. This poor traffic management causes non-stop and endless traffic jam in the city routinely. In economic consideration, the nation loses millions of work hours on the jammed wheel causing enormous losses of all the traffic points. Traffic management at Farm Gate Crossing is the poorest or worst.

The North-South Kazi Nazrul Road is earmarked for the VIPs. So the traffic police give unwanted attention to keep the VIP route free. On the other side, nearly 40% of the traffic and transports coming from Mirpur (and adjoining areas) direction approaching towards Southeastern part of the city have to enter the VIP road through Farm Gate point. As the police are too busy with the VIP clearance the commoners suffer most. They are kept on hold for unusually long time at this point.

It seems none bothers for the common people. The VIPs take the most. This is not a good sign for a society advocating equality.

USAID hosts education summit

According to a Press Release received from Washington, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will host a 'Higher Education Summit for Global Development' through which higher educational institutions in the developed and developing world, private sector businesses, and foundations will be able to build partnerships and share best practices for development. In this summit, emphasis will be given to emerging and innovative technologies that can help overcome the obstacles to higher education and to knowledge and technology transfer in developing countries. While appreciating the USAID's initiative in holding such an important summit, I sincerely hope that the outcome of this summit will create opportunities for Bangladesh towards building partnerships and in sharing knowledge and experiences for her own development.
