Elderly man beaten to death in Sirajganj

An elderly man was beaten to death by some miscreants at Kakilamari village in Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj district on Saturday morning following the previous enmity.

The victim was identified as Shahid Pramanik, 65, son of late Madhu Pramanik of the village.

According to police that, an altercation had been going on between Pramanik group and Shikder group for long time.

Following the feud, a gang of miscreants numbering eight to ten belonging to Shikder group attacked on Shahid on his way at around 9.00 am, when he was going to local Baza'ar. The attackers beat him to death and left his body on the spot.

Being informed, Shahzadpur thana police rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Later it was sent to Sirajganj Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.

A case was lodged with Shahzadpur thana in this connection.

Adviser for Primary, Mass Education, Women and Children and Cultural Affairs Rasheda K Chowdhury said Rabindranath Tagore is a wonderful genius of Bengali literature.

"Tagore was not mere a poet, rather a novelist, short story writer, philosopher, educationist, musician, actor and also painter," she said while addressing a function titled "Rabindranath: Aloker Jharnadhara" at Shilaidaha Kuthibari Ground here. Local Administration organised the function.

Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Nepur Ahmed, the function was addressed, by Additional Secretary of Primary and Mass Education Ministry Kazi Akhter Hossain and Prof. Dr Sarwar Murshid.

The adviser said Tagore acquired special skills on Bangla, English and Sangskrit at his early age. She said our national anthem, composed by the great poet, inspires us every day to patriotism.

Concerted efforts to develop primary education underscored

Speakers at a discussion meeting underscored the need for quality education at Primary Level to make worthy citizens of the country.

They called upon teachers, guardians and members of the managing committees for taking concerted efforts to develop the quality of primary education as well as the quality of students.

They said this while addressing a discussion meeting organised to develop Primary Education and prize awarding function held recently at Mankin Binud Bari Government Primary School premises in Muktagacha Upazila.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer AKM Tipu Sultan was present as chief guest while upazila primary education Officer Abu Haris, journalist AZM Imamuddin Mukta and Harun-or-Rashid, EEO of Amtali in Borgona district were the special guests. Hasan Sarker, President of School Managing Committee presided over the function. Welcoming the guests. Head Teacher of the school Mesbah Uddin presented annual performance report of the school.

Speakers emphasised on regular attendance of students in the school and mothers' initiatives in this respect. After discussion, chief guest UNO AKM Tipu Sultan distributed prizes among the best students of the school. Uniforms were also distributed among the poor students of the school.

Cattle, goats distributed in Chuadanga

As many as 19 cattleheads, 15 goats, 5 rickshaw vans, 5 sewing machines, a good number of ducks and micro-credit were distributed among 60 inmates of "Akondobaria Abshan Project" at Begumpur union under Sadar Upazila here on Wednesday.

Maj Gen Mohammad Shamim Chowdhury formally distributed those at a simple ceremony.

Deputy Commissioner Mokhlesur Rahman presided over the function.

Brig Gen Shah Atiqur Rahman, local joint force Chief Lt Col Badrul Hasan, Police Super Mofizuddin and Sadar UNO Shahabuddin Khan were present on the occasion.

Shamim Chowdhury said the government has been working to make poorer section self-reliant and urged the beneficiaries to utilise the government's help properly.

Mobile court fines Tk 26,000 in Satkhira

A mobile court realised Taka 26,000 as fines from two hotels, one bakery and one stationery shop in the town during an anti-adulteration campaign on Thursday.

Led by Magistrate AKM Azadur Rahman, the mobile court, comprising the members of Police and BSTI officials, conducted the drives to different places.

The court fined the businessmen for selling adulterated and rotten foodstuffs in unhygienic environment and date expired goods and other reasons, District Administration sources said.

The court realised Taka 10,000 as fine from the Siraj Hotel, Taka 5,000 from Hotel Corner, Taka 5,000 from Shaheen Bakery and Taka 6,000 from Bakal Bhandari Stationery in the town.

Farmers’ conference held in Faridpur

A conference of farmers was held at Mirgi Government Primary School premises under Sadar Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The officials of the District Administration and District Agriculture Extension Department (DAE) participated in the conference.

Deputy Director of DAE of the district Farooq Ahmed presided over the function.

A milad mahfil and doa was also held for production of bumper Boro paddy in the district.

Rich tributes paid to Ramesh Shil

Speakers at a gathering here on Saturday paid rich tributes to late versifier (Kabial) Ramesh Shil and recalled his outstanding contributions in flourishing the country's folk culture.

"Ramesh Shil is a history of our folk culture whose verse was great source and inspiration of courage and strength, " they said. They urged the persons involved in the cultural and literature fields to uphold the contribution of the internationally renowned Ekushey Medal winner versifier by research on his life and works.

Kobial Ramesh Shil Smriti Sangsad, Bangladesh organised the discussion to mark his 131st birth anniversary at city's Mawlana Islamabadi Memorial Hall on Saurday afternoon.

Presided over by Sangsad President engineer Chandan Das, the discussion wad addressed among others by eminent scientist Prof Emirates Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam, Assistant Editor of the Daily Azadi Aurun Das Gupta, General Secretary of Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) Najimuddin Shymol Folk researcher Dr Selim Jahangir, Mrinal Chowdhury, Mahbub Hasan, Prof Alex Alim and Kobial Abdul Aziz Sarkar while Abul Fazal Babul conducted it.

Jamal Nazrul Islam said that Ramesh Shil had introduced renaissance in the country's cultural field through his huge contribution in folk culture.

The discussion was followed by a cultural function where noted Kobial performed Ramesh songs.

Cattle trader injured by BSF firing

JOYPURHAT, May 12: Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot and wounded a Bangladeshi cattle trader at Pagla Dewan frontier in Sadar upazila early Friday. BDR sources said the Indian border guards fired shots towards a group of Bangladeshi cattle traders along the border at about 4.30am, leaving Mesban Ali, 29, son of Mokhlesur Rahman of Koria village of Panchbibi upazila, injured. They also dragged away the injured cattle trader to their camp, one of the witnesses said, reports UNB.



Dacoit lynched in Madaripur

MADARIPUR, May 12: An alleged dacoit was lynched by a mob at Bachamara village in Shibchar upazila early Friday. The dead was identified as Saidur Rahman Bepari, 35, son of Helaluddin of nearby Beparikandi village in the upazila. Sources said when a gang of four robbers entered the house of Chandu Matabbor at about 2am at Bachamara village for committing robbery villagers caught one of them, Saidur, gouged out his eyes and then beat him to death, reports UNB.



Body recovered

MADARIPUR, May 12: Police recovered the body of a young girl from Dhuasar village in Kalkini on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Farida Begum, 22, daughter of Abdul Wadud of Mahisher Char village in Sadar upazila of the district. Local people found the body in a papaya garden at noon and informed the police. Later, police sent the body to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.



451 sacks Indian fertilizer seized

JESSORE, May 12: Rapid Action Battalion members seized 451 sacks of substandard Indian Potash fertilizer from a shop near Navaran health complex in Sharsha upazila headquarters Wednesday. Acting on a secret information, the elite force raided the shop of Noor Mohammad and recovered the fertilizer. Sensing police presence the shop owner and his associates fled the scene.
