Sector commanders seek people's unity for trial of war criminals

The Sector Commanders Forum (SCF) urged the Freedom Fighters (FFs), people from all walks of life, pro-liberation forces and patriots to forge a rock-solid unity with the spirit of the War of Liberation to ensure trial of the war criminals.

The SCF leaders made the call while addressing a number of view-exchange meetings in Dinajpur, Rangpur and Bogra on May 6, 7 and 8, organised by the Greater Dinajpur, Rangpur and Bogra Views-Exchange Committees with the FFs, teachers, students, journalists, cultural activists and civil society members.

They said that there should not be any barrier in doing so as the Chief Adviser, the Chief of Army and the Chief Election Commissioner had given their positive remarks on this issue and trial of the war criminals should begin immediately to free the nation from a stigma.

Chairman of the SCF and Deputy Chief of Bangladesh Forces in War of Liberation Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khondoker, Bir Uttam, addressed the meetings as the chief guest with conveners of the views-exchange committees of the respective areas in the chair.

Sector Commanders of the War of Liberation Maj Gen (retd) KM Shafiullah, BU, and Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta, BU, SCF central members M Hamid, Colonel (retd) Dr Shamsul Alam, Maj Gen (retd) Masudur Rahman, Bir Protik, Maj Gen (retd) Jamil D Ahsan, BP, and former Army Chief Lt Gen (retd) Harunur Rashid, BP, also addressed the meeting.

Local leaders of the Muktijoddha Sangsad and valiant FFs of these districts also spoke on the occasion and expressed their solidarity with the SCF leaders in bringing the war criminals under a fair trail they deserve even after 37 years.

Chief Coordinator of the SCF Lt Gen (retd) Harunur Rashid, BP, elaborated the ideals and objectives of the organisation in the meetings saying they want trial of the war criminals.

Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khondoker from his wartime experiences briefly narrated how the nation, barring only a very few, and the Freedom Fighters liberated the country through a nine-month heroic struggle in 1971.

5 dead bodies recovered from separate places in Barisal

Recovery of brutally killed five unidentified dead bodies in four weeks in different areas of Barisal district created sensation among the law enforcing agencies.

Related sources said unidentified dead body of an old aged male was recovered from Damper River under Mehendiganj police station on April 05.

Dead body of a female as recovered from Katadia canal of Bakerganj police station on April 13.

Beheaded dead body of a youth was recovered from Kirtonkhola River near Rasulpur slum area of the city on April 22.

United efforts to resist deal against national interest underscored

Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday called upon the caretaker government to cancel all natural resources agreements against national interest with multinational companies.

Speakers said at the seminar on 'Fuel Policy and National Interest Perspective on Bangladesh' at 4th arts building room no 121, on Wednesday.

The seminar was organised by Natural and Mineral Resource Development Committee of Rajshahi University. They also said mineral resources should be used only in the country, not for sale as the peoples is the owners of all natural resources.

Speakers also demanded neutral investigation on previous governments' corruption on coal, gas, port and powers sectors.

Prof Shamsul Alam, dean of electronic engineering of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology and director of energy institute presented main keynote paper on 'Fuel policy and national interest perspective on Bangladesh' at the seminar.

Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah, Prof Anu Muhammad, Prof MM Akash, Prof Musfik Ahmed, Prof AKM Abdul Mazid, advocate Hamidul Haque, Prof Musfik Ahmed and Prof Hassan Azizul Haque also spoke on the seminar.

The seminar was presided over by Prof Muhammad Naser, chairman of Natural and Mineral Resource Development Committee of Rajshahi University.

They urged all to be united to resist all agreements against national interest.

Several hundred university teachers, researchers, students and environment specialists took part in the seminar.

Husband to die for killing wife

A man has been sentenced to death by a court here for killing his second wife in Sadar Upazila of the district in 2007.

The convict was identified as Asalat Hossain of Gopinathpur village under the same upazila.

Judge of the Women and Children Repression Special Tribunal Mafizul Islam delivered the verdict on Wednesday. The court, however, acquitted Aharannesa, first wife of Asalat Hossain, as charges brought against her were not proved.

According to the prosecution, Asalat Hossain married Maryam Begum of Gopinathpur village. It was his second marriage. Earlier, Asalat Hossain had married Aharannesa.

Since his second marriage, Asalat Hossain had been demanding Taka one lakh as dowry from Maryam Begum and he used to torture her frequently.

On the night of February 14, 2007, Maryam Begum was beaten to death by Asalat Hossain and his first wife Aharannesa.

Shakera Khatun, mother of Maryam Begum, filed a case with Jhenaidah Police in this connection.

After investigation, SI Sikdar Motiar submitted charge sheet to the court. The judge after examining 21 witnesses handed down the verdict.

Internet line snapped in Narail

E-mail line has been cut off in Narail for over two weeks. As a result Internet users are in a great trouble in Narail.

One Internet users Kazi Hafiz of Narail town complained that this harassment is going on for some days but the authority concerned fails to take any necessary step. They also told us that this type of trouble occurs at every 2 or 3 months later.

When contacted Enamul Haque, EST of Narail T&T office told us, we have nothing to do locally regarding Internet line. We have forwarded this to Dhaka office.

Dacoity committed in Madaripur

A daring dacoity was committed in the house of a senior warrant officer of Bangladesh Army Golam Mostafa at Kawri village under Kendue union of Sadar Upazila of the district on April 16 last.

The masked dacoits numbering about 8/10 broke open the grill of window of his house. Entering the house they held all the inmates hostage with lethal weapons and looted 5 tolas of gold ornaments, Taka 3,000 in cash, several mobile sets, rechargeable lights, etc.

Farewell reception of AUB BBA students held in Rajshahi

The farewell function and banquet of 9th Batch of BBA students of Asian University Bangladesh (AUB), Rajshahi campus was held at a local restaurant Wednesday last night.

The function which was presided over by Monjur Elahi, Deputy Registrar of AUB was addressed, among others by former Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University Professor Rafiqul Islam, Professor Emeritus Yeakub Ali of RU, Professor Abul Kashem of RU, Professor Zahid Hossain Milkey of RU, General Manage of Bangladesh Bank, Rajshahi Abu Hena, Mohammad Razi Hasan, ADC General Sanowar Hossain, Manager BRAC Bank Ahsan Ali, Manager United Commercial Bank Selim Reza Khan, Regional Sales Manager of Citycell Kamruzzaman while Assistant Professor Ruhul Amin of AUB, passing out students Lupin, Imma, Nabi and Humayra spoke in favour of AUB.

The speakers in the function said, Asian University has been contributing a lot to create skill manpower through offering quality education and co-curricular activities.

Later on certificates were distributed among the students.

Valuables looted



Comilla, May 10: Dacoits looted valuables worth about Tk 10 lakh from six houses at Elahabad village in Debiwar upazila Monday injuring 10 people. Police said a gang of 25/30 armed robbers swooped on the houses of Khaleq, Kabir, Hasnat, Mariam, Acchia and Monir and looted valuables at gun point four about an hour. As the inmates resisted the robbers, they beat them up injuring 10 people. Seven of the injured were admitted to upazila health complex Medical College Hospital, reports UNB.





Businessman stabbed to death



Comilla, May 10: A small trader, stabbed by unknown miscreants at Singharikhala village in Debidwar upazila, succumbed to his injuries on way to Dhaka on Monday. The dead was identified Kabir Hossain, 25, son of Badsha Miah of the village. Police said some miscreants swooped on Kabir Hossain and stabbed him indiscriminately when he was returning home from Kangsanagar Bazar at night, leaving him critically injured. On Monday morning, local people rescued him and admitted to Comilla Medical Collage Hospital, reports UNB.



One gets life for murder



Sirajganj, May 10: A court here Monday convicted a man and awarded him life term imprisonment for killing a man in 2002. The court also fined the convict, Mahmud, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer three months more RI. According to prosecution, the convict chopped Abu Syed to death at Char Haripur village in sadar upazila following past enmity over land on January 17, 2002. A case was filed, reports UNB.
