Two statues of Ganesha seized

SAVAR, May 7: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized two statues of Ganesha, Hindu deity of success and wealth, at Bashail village in Shibalaya upazila of Manikganj district on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-4 conducted a drive in the village and recovered the statues - one weighting 10 kgs and another three kgs - worth about Tk 10 lakh. They also arrested statue smugglers Munaf Mia and Alal Uddin in this connection. A case was filed, reports UNB.



One commits suicide

RAJBARI, May 7: A middle-aged man allegedly committed suicide by jumping under a running train in Lokoshed area of the district town on Friday. The dead was identified Jagadish, 46. Police and witnesses said Jagadish jumped under the Doulatdia bound train from Rajbari at about 2:30pm when the train was passing the area. His body was cut into two pieces. Later, railway police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.



Valuables looted

HABIGANJ, May 7: Highwaymen looted valuables worth about Tk 5 lakh from the passengers of a bus at Sudiakhola in Sadar upazila on Habiganj-Shayestaganj road early Saturday. Sources said a gang of robbers intercepted the Inatganj-bound bus from Dhaka at about 1:00 am by putting barricade on the road. When the bus stopped at the point the robbers numbering 10/15 swooped on the passengers and took away cash, mobile phones and other valuables, reports UNB.



Cop killed in road mishap

NARAYANGANJ, May 7: A police constable was killed in a road accident in front of Kashipur check-post in Fatullah thana early Saturday. The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam of the district police lines and hailed from Bhanga upazila in Faridpur district. He was performing his duty at the check-post. Police said Shahidul died on the spot when a Munshiganj-bound microbus ran over him at about 1:30am as he tried to stop the vehicle at the check-post, reports UNB.
