Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has stressed quality education and its expansion for overall national development.

"We have to build our students as worthy citizens of tomorrow," the adviser said while speaking at the re-union of the Biswanath Ramsundar Agragami High School on the occasion of its Centenary celebration here yesterday.

Once educational institutions of the rural areas had name and fame. But those are now lagging far behind the institutions of the urban areas, the adviser said.

"The main reason is the dearth of educated and knowledgeable teachers," he said.

On the other hand, he said, the teachers do not get due respect in society.

Former headmaster Tajammul Ali chaired the function while former adviser brigadier general (retd) Dr M A Malik, Sylhet divisional commissioner Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan, Sylhet Press Club president Muktabis Un Nur and former deputy secretary Shuvradra Shekhar Bhattacharya also spoke on the occasion.
