7 IOCs vie for 15 offshore blocks: Poor response: Major oil cos absent, 13 blocks remain without bidding

Seven international oil companies (IOCs) yesterday submitted bids showing interest to take part in the offshore oil and gas exploration in Bay of Bengal. Though Petrobangla invited tenders for 28 offshore blocks in the Bay of Bengal, only 22 bids were submitted for 15 blocks. Seven companies submitted bids proposed to invest US$ 1,248.85 million for the offshore oil and gas exploration. The seven IOCs of different countries submitted their bids at Petrocentre in the city and the bids were opened before them. The bids were received till 1:00pm and opened at 2:00pm.  |

The Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday submitted charge-sheet in Niko scam case against detained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 8 others accusions them of causing a loss to Tk 13,650 crore to the state, while awarding gas exploration contract to the Canadian company without tender. ACC Deputy Director Shabbir Hasan, who filed the case with Tejgaon thana on December 9 last year and was the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge-sheet in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM's) Court at 4-30pm after enquiring into the scam.  |
Tagore’s birth anniversary today

The 147th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore will be observed across the country today with due respect to the versatile Bengali poet. Rabindranath Tagore, also known as 'Kobi Guru,' was a poet, visual artist, playwright, novelist and composer whose works reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The government has drawn up extensive programmes to celebrate the day at national level. The Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed will inaugurate Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary programmes at 10:00am at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.  |

Attack on cops in Bagmara: 5 looted arms recovered

Police yesterday recovered all the five firearms looted from police patrol at Taherpur in Rajshahi from a pond at Manjigachha near Naldanga thana in the district. Police found an SMG and four 3o3 rifles dumped in the pond, 500 to 600 yards from Naldanga thana following confessional statement of a suspected outlaw, Bachchu alias Nishan. He was arrested by police from Hazratpur village under Sadar thana of Natore on Tuesday night. During interrogation he confessed to his involvement in the attack on the policemen and arms looting in Taherpur bazar area of Rajshahi.  |
EC team apprises: President of progress in holding polls

A delegation of the Election Commission led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda called on President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban here yesterday. Election Commissioners Mohammad Suhul Hossain and Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhwat Hossain and Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Muhammad Humayan Kabir were present. Emerging out of the meeting, the CEC told the awaiting journalists that they apprised the President of the EC's different activities including the progress in preparing electoral roll aimed at holding the next general elections according to the road map, announced earlier by the EC.  |

Saifur leaves for S’pore: Admits losing authority as acting BNP chair

Acting chairperson of BNP (reformist) Saifur Rahman yesterday confessed that his leadership became infructuous after the party's standing-committee members who appointed him pulled out the rug from under his feet. "I don't have authority as acting chairperson after the standing-committee members who appointed me withdrew support through affidavit… It becomes infructuous," he told reporters at his Gulshan house. Saifur left for Singapore lastnight for medical treatment delegating none to head his faction of the immediate-past ruling party that fell in trouble following the detention of its chairperson and ex-PM Khaleda Zia.  |
