Locals assaulted two alleged burglars to death here at the premises of an apparel factory at Baro Awlia hours before dawn yesterday.

Police identified the dead burglars as Mohammad Harun (28) son of Abul Monsur, and Jahidul Islam (31) son of Shariful Islam.

Police quoting the eye-accounts said that both the burglars came under the watch of the night guards of the Equity Readymade Garment Factory while cutting the grill of a window at about 4:30 a.m.

The nightguards raised alarm. Responding to the alarm locals from the neighbourhoods rushed there and caught the burglars red-handed. Frenzied locals assaulted the detainees mercilessly leaving both of them critically wounded.

Police rescued them from the hands of the angry people and took both of them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared Harun dead, while his accomplice succumbed to his wounds shortly after admission.

Sitakund police recorded a case in connection with the lynching. None was, however, taken into custody so far.
