News Briefs PHED engineer killed in road accident UNB, Narail, Apr 10: An engineer of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) was killed and another injured in a road accident in pourashava area Thursday. The deceased was identified as Shikder Habibur Rahman, sub-station engineer of PHED's Kalia upazila sub-station. Police said a bus rammed into a motor cycle carrying Habibur and Sajjad Fakir at Masimdia crossing at bypass road of Chitra bridge, leaving two men injured in the morning. Two injured were taken to Sadar Hospital where Habibur, resident of Jhaudanga village in Lohagara upazila, died. Police seized the bus but its driver fled away. Money allocated under KABITA programme in Pirojpur Pirojpur, Apr 10: Relief and Rehabilitation Department has allocated Tk 2.50 crore among the Sidr-affected people under the Money for Work (Kajer Binimoye Taka-KABITA) programme. Of the total, Tk 34,56,500 has been allocated for Sadar upazila, Tk 15,69,500 for Zianagar, Tk 35,70,500 for Nazirpur, Tk 41,98,500 for Nesarabad, Tk 31,92,500 for Bhandaria, Tk 14,98,500 for Kaukhali and Tk 52,53,000 for Mathbaria upazila. Besides, Tk 14,34,000 has been allocated for Pirojpur pourashava, Tk 3,63,500 for Swarupkati and Tk 4,64,500 for Mathbaria pourashavas. The programme includes construction and reconstruction of roads, canal excavation and construction of bamboo-made bridges. Work on the programme will be started soon and completed by June this year, reports UNB. Housewife chopped to death after rape in Benapole UNB, Benapole, Apr 10: A housewife was chopped to death after rape at Kharidanga village here early Thursday. Police said miscreants abducted Nurunnahar Begum, 17, from her house at 4.50 am when she was asleep. They take her to a nearby garden and chopped her to death after rape. Local people said Nurunnahar was killed after a day she logged a complaint with local thana against one Alam of the village who used to disturb her. Police arrested a youth, Rafiq, in this connection. A case was filed, reports UNB. 4 die, 5 fall sick after eating Patka fish in Narsingdi UNB, Narsingdi, Apr 10: Four members of a family died and five others fell sick after eating 'potka' (puffer) fish at Saha village in Belabo upazila early Thursday. Freedom fighter Keramat and his brother Monir Hossain Monu bought the fish from local market on Wednesday evening and fell sick soon after eating the fish with their family members at night. Local people rushed nine family members to Belabo upazila health complex where Monir Hossain Monu, 50, died. After his death, the doctors of the upazila health complex referred the other sick family members to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. They were sent to DMCH early today where Hazera Begum, 43, wife of Monir Hossain, her son Shahabullah, 25, and Keramat, 60, died later. A DMCH source said eight people were admitted to the hospital early today where three of them died later. 4 women get life in Faridpur UNB, Faridpur, Apr 10: Local courts, on Tuesday and Wednesday, sentenced four women to life term imprisonment under the Narcotics Control Act. District and Sessions Judge M Abdul Majid on Wednesday jailed Taslima Begum Lata, 22, of Barisal for life term and also fined her Tk 2,000. Department of Narcotics Control officials arrested Lata along with five kgs of phensidyl syrup from the district on June 20, 2005. In another verdict, Judge M Shafiqul Islam of Additional Sessions Judge Court on Tuesday sentenced three other women to life term imprisonment and also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year RI more, reports UNB.
