Bumper potato produced in Thakurgaon, Panchagarh

A devastating fire in Gohira Bariband area under Anwara upazila in the district burnt alive five of a family and destroyed three slum houses on Tuesday, police and fire brigade sources said.
The victims were identified as Rosina Akter, 13, Ali Akbar,11, Ali Azam,9, Nezam Uddin,7, and Abdul Karim,5.
The victims were sons and daughters of one Mohammad Idris, a day labour who hailed from the same area.
The sources said the blaze completely damaged property worth about Taka one lakh.
Fire Brigade officials said the fire was originated from a candle of a house at around 10.30 p.m. The flame soon engulfed other adjacent houses damaging the valuables of the establishments.
The victims who were asleep inside their house could not come out when fire spreading and roasted alive inside their room. Their charred bodies were recovered after extinguishing the inferno at about 11.30 p.m.
The victim's parents went to visit their relatives at Anwara Sadar leaving their offspring in the slum houses.

2 dacoits arrested in Brahmanbaria

Police arrested two dacoits from Daruin village of Mogra union under Akhaura upazila on Saturday night while they were taking preparation to commit dacoity.
The arrested were identified as Sunny, 23, of Uttar Mourail under Akhaura Pourasabha and Suman Khandker of Dakhkhin Mourail of the same Pourasabha.
A case has been filed with Akhaura Police Station in this connection.
3 arrested with OMS rice in Barisal

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three persons alleged for Open Market Sell (OMS) rice selling in black-market at Band road Bhaterkhal area in the city on Tuesday.
The arrested persons were identified as Sikdr, 40, Siraj Mredha, 45 and Jasim Mredha.
RAB said when the arrested persons selling three sacks OMS rice in the market in a secret information, RAB members caught red handed them from the spot. Later, the arrested persons handed to police and filed a case with respective police station in this connection.
Meeting on Health Education held in Khulna

An advocacy meeting on health education was held in the School Health Clinic in the city on Tuesday.
Health Education Bureau and Centre for Research Development (CRD) jointly organised meeting.
The meeting discussed various diseases including AIDS and pneumonia.
Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Lutfar Rahman Khan presided over the meeting while Dipak Kumar of the CRD attended it as special guest.
Discussion on Siratunnabi (SM) held in Gopalganj

A discussion meeting on the occasion of the Siratunnabi (SM) was held at Sonakoir Al Mahfiza Mosque under Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, organised by Islamic foundation Gopalganj district office on Friday.
Advocate Khandakar Mahabubuddin Ahmed former MP remained present as chief guest and Khondaker Shamsuddin Nehal principal Dhaka Central Law College was present as special guest.
Mukti Moulana Moinuddin Principal, Gonakoir Darul Ulum short course Madrasha presided over the discussion meeting.
The discussion meeting on the occasion was addressed among others by Mohammad Anisuzzaman Sikdar Deputy Director Islamic foundation Gopalganj district office, Moulana Mohibullah Director Gopalganj Muslim Atimkhana and Madrasha and Moulana Imran Hossain Education Secretary Farfura Madrasha.
Islamic foundation Gopalganj district office distributed Islami books to Advocate Khandaker Mahabubuddin former MP and Khandaker Shamsuddin Wehad, prinicpal Dhaka Central Law College.
Fertiliser distributed among marginal farmers in B'baria

A four-day-long fertiliser distribution programme ended at Titas Purbanchal area in the district on Monday.
Members of Bangladesh Army distributed the fertiliser among 153 marginasl farmers. Each of the farmers received five kg fertilizer.
Commander of District Joint Forces Major Mohammad Mizanur Rahman supervised the fertiliser distribution programme.
A discussion was organised on the occasion Major Mizanur Rahman said, the government will help the marginal farmers who are cultivating vegetables besides food. He ensured all kinds of support to the farmers at Titas area for increasing vegetable production.
Agriculture Officer Habibur Rahman, Block Supervisor Muslem Uddin and others concerned were also present on the occasion.
Round-table on TB held in Rajbari

A day-long roundtable on tuberclusis and lung diseases was held at the civil surgeon's office organised by VPKA and Rajbari Forum with financial supported by WBB Trust on Sunday.
With Md. Bazlul Haque, Civil Surgeon in the chair, the programme was attended by Additional Deputy Magistrate Md. Nurul Alam as the chief guest. The function was addressed, among others, by Mahfuzur Rahman, ASP Rajbari circle, Moazzem hossain, youth development officer, Dr Mizanul Haque, Aminul Islam, Shaila Ferzana, Ali Hossain Pony, Md. Cops hurt in attack
Habiganj, Apr 6 (UNB) - Four police personnel were injured in an attack when they were trying to settle a feud between the people of Bhadikara and Mudiauk villages in Laghai upazila Sunday afternoon. Police said conflict ensued between people of the two villages as one of the residents of Mudiauk village commented that there had no gentleman in Bhadikara village. On information, police, led by OC Sunil Kanti Bosak, went to spot to settle the matter, reports UNB.
Fisherman killed
Noakhali, Apr 6: A fisherman was attacked and killed allegedly by his fellow fishermen as he tried to console them during an argument at Shullukia village in Hatia upazila on Sunday. Local sources said Nagendra Kumar Das, 45, a leader of local fisherman community, died on the spot during the attack. Police said heated exchanged between fishermen Putul Majhee and Jiban Majhee in the morning over previous enmity. Hearing the news, Nagendra came to the spot and tried to console them. But, Putul and Jiban attacked him and started punching and kicking him, leaving Nagendra dead on the spot. Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.
One killed in bomb explosion
Meherpur, Apr 6: A man was killed in bomb explosion on Kazipur frontier in Gangni upazila early Sunday. Police and BDR sources said Afazuddin, 42, who was carrying bombs with him, entered into Bangladesh part from India through the Kazipur border during the early hours today. But the bombs exploded as he fell down while crossing the barbwire near main pillar no 144 leaving him critically injured. Hearing explosion, local people rushed to the spot and found Afazuddin lying in a pool of blood. He died on the way to hospital, reports UNB.
Muggers snatch Tk 9.73 lakh in Narayanganj
Narayanganj, Apr 6: Muggers snatched Tk 9.73 lakh of a filling station near Godnail under Siddhirganj thana in Sadar upazila Sunday morning. Locals said a gang of terrorists, numbering 6/7, coming in a private car intercepted Sohel Rana and Abdul Gani, nephews of the owner of Mouchak Sams Filling Station, when they were going to Sonali Bank, Godnail branch to deposit Tk 9.73 lakh of the filling station at about 9.30am. The muggers created panic among the local people by firing gun shots and exploding bombs and snatched the money carrying bag from the two brothers, reports UNB.
Agriculture dept facing manpower shortage
Barisal, Apr 6: Activities of the agriculture department of the district are being hampered seriously due to shortage of manpower. District Agriculture Extension Department sources said 48 important posts out of 456 of this department have been lying vacant for long. The vacant posts are- nine posts of upazila additional agriculture officers, three upazila assistant agriculture officers, three upazila agriculture extension officers, 10 junior upazila agriculture extension officers, eight sub-assistant agriculture officers, one head assistant, four office assistant-cum-typists, one car driver, five guards and four sweepers, reports UNB.
Madrassah student gunned down
Chittagong, Apr 6: A madrassah student, who is also an SSC examinee, was shot dead by muggers in Jamalkhan area of the port city Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Ziaul Huq, 20, son of Haji Syedul Huq of Ashker Dighir Par of the city. Police said a gang of three snatchers, came by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, intercepted Ziaul near Metropolitan Commercial College at about 11pm when he was going to his friend's house for note collection, reports UNB.
