News Briefs 3 held with phensidyl Sirajganj, Apr 1: Three people were arrested along with 1000 bottles of phensidyl from West side of Jamuna Bridge on Monday. Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-12 halted a private car in the Goal Chattar area and recovered the phensidyl from it. They also seized the car and held Shahidul, Fazlu and Rafiqul in this connection. The arrested were handed over to police. A case was filed with the police station, reports UNB. Teenager killed in road mishap Chandpur, Apr 1: A teenage boy was crushed under the wheels of a tractor at West Larua village in Faridganj upazila Monday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Russel, 15, Mohojampur village in Haimchar upazila. Sources said Russel, fell down from a brick-laden tractor suddenly and crushed under the wheels of the vehicle. Duty doctors of Haimchar Health Complex declared Russel dead when local people rushed him to the hospital. A case was filed with the local police station, reports UNB. One crushed under wheels of truck Kishoreganj, Apr 1: A man was killed in a tragic road accident at Sorumara in Sadar upazila Tuesday noon. The dead was identified as Hasibur Rahman, 35, son of Abdul Motaleb of Kolapara village in Sadar upazila. Police said a truck knocked Hasibur down when he was crossing Kishoreganj-Tarail road at about 12.45pm leaving him critically injured. He died on the way to Sadar Hospital. The law enforcers seized the truck but the driver managed to run away the scene, reports UNB. Octogenarian burnt to death Chittagong, Apr 1: An old man burnt to death and 35 shanties went up in flames in a fire at Pathantali Slum in the port city's double-mooring area early Tuesday. The victim was identified as Jorab Ali, 80. Fire-brigade sources said the fire originated at about 1am in a shanty from an electric short- circuit and soon engulfed 34 other slums. The old Jorab meet his tragic end asleep as he could not manage to come out from his house on fire, reports UNB. Touchstone statue recovered Madaripur, Apr 1: Members of the Rapid Action Battalion-8 recovered two precious statues of lord 'Vishnu' worth about Tk 20 crore from Madaripur and Barisal districts Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, the elite-force personnel raided Dhaji village in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district and arrested Niranjan Bagchi, 50, along with a statue of Vishnu weighing 120 kilograms. The value of the Vishnu image is about Tk 12 crore, RAB sources said. In a separate raid on Mihipasha village in Agailjhara upazila of Barisal district, the elite force seized a 62-kg statue of Vishnu worth Tk 8 crore at about 10am, reports UNB. Eyes of BNP leader gouged out in Goalando Goalundo, Apr 1: Terrorists gouged out eyes of a BNP leader at Daulatdia union in the upazila Tuesday morning. The victim is Abdul Hamid Mridha,45, president of BNP Daulatdia union unit and also a member of Daulatdia union parishad. Police said a gang of unidentified terrorists swooped on Abdul Hamid at Alek Sarder para when he was going for his work at about 9am. They beat him up mercilessly, gouged out his eyes with sharp weapon and left the scene thinking him dead. Hearing his cry local people rushed to the spot and first took him to local health complex and then shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Later he was taken to Islamia Eye Hospital in Dhaka as his condition deteriorated, reports UNB.
