Officials urged to work with honesty, sincerity for dev

In a meeting on upazila development and coordination was held at the conference room of upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sundargonj Upazila in the district on March 9.
Newly joined Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abu Mohammad Yousuf addressed the meeting as chief guest.
Presided over by M. Barad Hossain Chowdhury, UNO of the upazila, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Upazila Agriculture Officer M. Shafayet Hossain, Pouro Chairman Nurunabi Pramanik Saju, Head-teacher of Shibram Govt Primary School M. Nural Alam, Dahaband Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Majid Mondal and local Press Club president M. Shajahan Miah.
The meeting discussed elaborately about the development issues like agriculture, education, communication and law and order and various problems of the upaizla. DC Abu Mohammad Yousuf assured in the meeting for solving the on-going problems of the upazila as early as possible.
He also urged the upazila level officials and the public representative to discharge their duties with almost sincerity and honesty for gearing up the development activities in the upazilas.
More than 50 upazila level officials, public representativen business leaders, UNO workers, teachers including journalists attend the meeting.
Acute firewood crisis in Rangpur

Firewood crisis has taken a serious turn in Rangpur district. Sources said firewood crisis is increasing day by day in all the 8 upazilas of the district, affecting the common people.
It may be mentioned that one maund of firewood is being sold at taka 240- Taka 300 Taka in different parts of the district. It is very difficult for the commoners to purchase one maund firewood for Taka 240-300. So at present the people of the low-income group are using dry leaves of different trees and bamboos in cooking rice and curry in the district.
A large number of poor people are making firewood with cowdung and bamboo sticks.
One cylinder of LP gas is being sold at taka 1150 to 1250. So, as the price of gas increased abnormally, the people are using firewood as fuel in cooking their rice and other items.
Six killed in separate road accidents in four districts

One person was killed and five others were injured in two separate road accidents that took place in two separate places of the distract on Thursday.
Police said the first accident took place yesterday noon near Hijolgary farm under Chuadanga sadar upazila when a locally made three wheeler named "Alamshadhu" hit three persons when they were going by bicycles. All of them were injured. Immediately they were taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital for treatment. The injured are Momin 30, Kumar Haldar 38, and Birendronath Haldar all of village Dugdoogi under Damurhuda upazila of the district. On the other hand, the second road accident took place near Akondobaria petrol pump on Chuadanga-Darsana-Jibannagar bus route last night at about 10 O'clock in which one person was killed and two others were injured. Police said a power tiller and a Mishuk collided head on here. One Shahabuddin, a passenger of the Mishuk was injured seriously and died at the Chuadanga Sadar hospital. Two other passengers of the Mishuk Sirajul and his son, a school student Jamrul were also seriously injured in the accident. Both of them were also admitted to the hospital for treatment.
BSS, Brahmanbaria adds: One person was killed and four others were injured in an accident on Sarail- Nasirnagar road in the district on Tuesday.
The dead was identified as Azizul Islam, 40, of Maddhya Noagoan village under Sarail upazila. Police sources said Azizul was killed as two passenger-carrying CNG autorickshaws collided on Sarail- Nasirnagar road. The injured were taken to Sarail upazila health complex.
Meanwhile, one person was killed in a road accident at Uttar Alekanda Bogra road of the district on Tuesday night.
Police said the dead was identified as Rafiqul Islam,30 a van driver of Sirajganj.
The accident occurred when Rafiqul was carrying tubewell equipment's in his van from Kaunia to Battala. As he reached the Bogra road a truck coming from the opposite direction hit him. He was seriously injured.
Local people rushed him to Shebachim Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
BSS, Madaripur adds: One person was killed in a road accident at Kolatola area on Shibchar-Hossainpur road under Shibchar upazila in the district on Tuesday.
The dead was identified as Ala Mia Bepri, 48, of Kamarkandi of Nilkhirchar of the same area.
Police sources said Ala was killed as two passenger-carrying tempos collided head-on Shibchar-Hossainpur road. Four other persons were also injured in the accident.
Meanwhile: Two persons including a minor girl were killed in separate road accidents under Siddherganj Police Station in the district on Tuesday night.
Police said Mahima Akhter, 6, daughter of Shamim Ahmed was run over by a speeding truck at Pathantoli of Narayanganj-Demra road at around 8 PM yesterday.
In another incident an unidentified person aged about 30 succumbed to his injuries at Kachpur Sughandha Clinic.
He was admitted to the clinic after receiving injury in a road accident at Sanarpar on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway under Siddhirganj Police Station in the early hours of today.
The driver along with the truck escaped soon after the accident.
Police sent the body to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy.
UK immigrant donates tubewell, money among: SIDR-hit people in Bagerhat

With a view to making proper arrangement for pure drinking water a U.K. immigrant Manik Mia of Bhugsail village, under Biswaas Nath upazila, Dstrict Sylhet donated fifty tube-wells and Tk. two lakh cash money to the Sidr-affected people of Bagerhat.
A meeting was arranged at Swadhinata Uddyan, Bagerhat. Deputy Commissioner Bagerhat Sahidul Islam adorned the charge of chief guest while Moniruzzaman, ADM Chairman Biswanath Union Parishad of Sylhet, Saiful Hoque Chairman Lamakazi Union, Kabir Hossain, General Secy. Biswanath Merchant Association Madhu Principal Abdul Matin Qudrati were present as special guests of honour.
International Women's Day observed in Panchagarh

International Women's Day/08 was observed in Panchagarh which was jointly organised by District Women's Affairs Department, Panchagarh and other government or Non-govt Women Social Organisations at the Panchagarh government Auditorium. Deputy Commissioner Panchagarh Md. Hafiz Uddin was present as the chief guest. The function was presided over by Firoza Begum, District Women's Affairs Officer, Panchagarh. A Rally was brought out at 9.30 AM and paraded the main roads of Panchagarh town and a discussion and cultural show were also held at Panchagarh Govt Auditorium.
Navy personnel urged to help build corruption free society
Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam urged all Naval personnel to help civil administration for building corruption free society while addressing in a Darbar at Chittagong Naval area Thursday.
Navy Chief expressed his deep satisfaction for registering 21 lakh voters and completing 10 lakh voter ID card by Naval Personnel in the coastal area, says a ISPR press release.
Earlier, Navy Chief visited the on going activities of newly commissioned frigate BNS KHALID BIN WALID and modernisation programme of missile system of BNS OSMAN.
Among others, Commodore Commanding Chittagong, Commodore Commanding BN Flotilla, Commodore Superintendent BN Dockyard, Director of Naval Intelligence, officers of Chittagong Naval area, sailors and civilian personnel were present.
Month-long trade fair begins in Brahmanbaria

A month-long Trade Fair began on Wednesday at the premises of Annahda Government School aimed at promoting local products.
The fair, jointly organised by District Chamber of Commerce and Industry and District administration, was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Hai.
Former ward commissioner Mohammad Elyas, among others, spoke at the inaugural function.
A total of 90 stalls have been set up in the fair.

College student stabbed to death in Narsingdi
Narsingdi, Mar 13: A college student was stabbed to death by miscreants at Chandanbari village in Monohordi upazila on Wednesday night.
The dead was identified as Al Amin, 22, 2nd year honours student of Bengali Department of Narsingdi Government College and also son of Moslehuddin.
Family sources said Al Amin received a phone call on his mobile phone at about 9pm and went out of the house. But he didn't return home the whole night.
After a hectic search, family members found the body of Al Amin that bore stab injury marks on a fallow land nearby his house this (Thursday) morning, reports UNB.
Valuables looted
Jhalakati, Mar 13: Dacoits looted cash and valuables worth Tk 2 lakh from a house at Hodua village in Nolchhiti upazila Tuesday night. Police said the gang numbering 10/12 entered the house of Abdul Hye at dead of night and took away cash, gold ornaments and other valuables after tying up the inmates at gunpoint. The robbers later fled away along with the booty. A case was filed, reports UNB.
2 killed in Chandpour road mishap
Chandpur, Mar 13: Two people were killed in separate road accidents in the district Tuesday. Sources said Sajib, 10, a student of class III of Horina Government Primary School in Sadar uapzila, was crushed under the wheels of a Chandpur bound bus. Doctors declared him dead when he was taken to Sadar hospital. Besides, a speeding bus knocked down Yusuf, 40, and his daughter at Fakirbari in Faridganj uapzila on the same day. Yusuf later succumbed to his injuries at Sadar hospital. Separate cases were filed with the police, reports UNB.
