Roadside death trap Zakir hossain bye-lane in The Port City of Chittagong is one of the short but busiest link roads. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles mostly private and small passenger carriers prefer this short-cut way to save time and to avoid traffic jam on GEC turning. But unfortunately, the road is plagued with a number of problems. Both sides of this road have been narrowed down by illegal occupants who have annexed sizeable portion of the road on both sides and raised therein makeshift or concreted structures for commercial purpose. On the other hand, the uncovered, huge and deep culvert alongside the road poses a great threat to pedestrians and vehicles alike using the road constantly. This uncovered wide culvert is a virtual death trap for school goers, morning walkers and elderly pedestrians. For a running vehicle, a moment of unmindful driving, or a slight collision with the other ones, motorised or otherwise, may reach the living inmates of the vehicle or people in passing to the pit of the culvert with assured death or permanent injury. Customarily, our administration does not wake up until or unless any untoward situation is happened in public life. While strolling on that way I was thinking within myself how the relevant authorities like City Corporation and CDA under the present Care Taker Government can keep silence on matters of public issues. Have they no time to stand and stare? Have they no patrolling official to oversee, assess and report the public agonies to the higher authorities for remedial measures? M. A. Binyamin Dhaka
