The agitating students of Dhaka University demanding rational rearrangement of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) quota system has called strike for three days beginning today (Tuesday) at all public universities and university colleges to press home their demand.
The students called the strike from a rally at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus yesterday. However, all examinations will be out of the purview of the programme.
The students threatened to go for tougher movement like indefinite strike from next week, if their demands are not met within seven days.
The students at the rally said, if most of the appointments are made under the quota system, majority of the talented candidates will not get chance in the civil service and that would cause intellectual bankruptcy in the civil service.
Convenor of the platform KM Selim, Khomenee Ehsan, Aminur Rahman, Karim Sarkar, Ainul Haque Anik, Tarikul Islam, among others, addressed the rally.
The students also brought out a procession which paraded the campus.
From among the successful BCS examinees, total 55 per cent of the appointments are made under four quotas, including freedom fighters (30 per cent), women and district quotas (10 per cent each) and indigenous quota (five per cent).
