Two JCD cadres arrested in Sylhet



SYLHET, Feb 23: Police in their separate drives in the city arrested two cadres of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and recovered a firearm on Tuesday. Acting on secret information police conducted a drive in Badambagicha area of the city and arrested JCD Mizan group cadre Rezaul Karim along with a pipe-gun and one cartridge at about 1pm. In another drive police also arrested another JCD activist Foyzul Karim Kayes of Emran group from Sonarpara area at about 5pm. He was wanted in a number of extortion, hijacking and other criminal cases, police said, reports UNB.



Husband gets life for killing wife



SYLHET, Feb 22: A court here Tuesday sentenced a man to life term in jail for killing his wife in Goainghat upazila six years back. The lifer was identified as Kacha Mia, 36, of Jalsufa village in Ajmiriganj upazila of Habiganj district. According to the prosecution, the convict slaughtered his wife Rafina Khatun, 32, over a family feud in January 19, 2002 at his shanty at Ajmiri slum in Goainghat upazila. After the incident, local people caught him from the spot and handed him over to police. Later, a murder case was filed against him. After examining the records and 13 witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Ferdous Ahmed pronounced the verdict, reports UNB.



Bombs recovered



CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Feb 22: Elite force RAB recovered 12 live bombs at Dhumihayatpur village in Shibganj upazila early Wednesday. Acting on a tip off, a team of RAB-5 recovered the bombs from the abandoned house of Abul Latif at the village at about 3am. But they could not arrest any one in this connection. Later, RAB personnel handed over the bombs to local police station, reports UNB.



Teenage boy found dead



MYMENSINGH, Feb 22: A teenage boy was found dead at Bhakua Beel (water body) in Iswarganj upazila on Tuesday. The dead was identified as Sohel, 14, son of Moslemuddin of Parahar village in Nandail upazila. Police said Sohel was missing since he went out of his house Monday morning. Later, local people found his body at the beel and on information police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB.



Phensidyl seized



CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Feb 22: Members of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), in separate drives, recovered 1,100 bottles of phensidyl syrup and 1,000 Indian Rupees from different places in Shibganj upazila Monday and Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, members of BDR 39 battalion raided Binodpur Bazar in the upazila at about 12:30 pm Tuesday and recovered 1,000 Indian Rupees from a bag lying in an abandoned position behind a shop. BDR suspected the smugglers fled away leaving the bag sensing their presence.



Rapist get life-term in Rajbari



RAJBARI, Feb 22: A tribunal here Monday convicted a young man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for violating a minor girl in 2004. The Women and Children Repression Prevention tribunal also fined the convict Aiyub Ali alias Buna, of Udaypur village in Sadar upazila, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six month more rigorous imprisonment. According to the prosecution, Aiyub Ali on August 14, 2004, took his neighbour's six years old daughter to a remote sugarcane-field and violated her. Hearing the shrill cry of the victim local people rushed to the spot and sent her to the hospital in profusely bleeding condition. Later, the victim's mother filed a case and police after investigation submitted charge sheet against Aiyub. After examining the records and witnesses Tribunal Judge M Belayet Hossain pronounced the verdict, reports UNB.
