Amior Ekushey and International Mother Language Day was observed in the district in a befitting manner as elsewhere in the country yesterday.

The programmes of the day began following Deputy Commissioner M Jamal Uddin placed wreaths at the alter of Central Shaheed Minar at one minute past midnight here, which was followed by Acting Police Super Sohel Fedouse, District Health Directorate, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Kurigram Pourasava and Kurigram Press Club, among others.

One minute solemn silence was also observed in honour of the language martyrs, followed by offering Munajat for lasting peace of the departed souls, who sacrificed their lives in the language movement.

Later, a morning rally led-by deputy commissioner was also brought out in the district town where all sections of people joined.

Besides, the District Administration has taken up a three-day elaborate programmes marking the day.

The programmes, include painting competitions for children, book fair, discussions and cultural functions.
