JPC honours 64 writer-members

Jatiya Press Club (JPC) honoured its 64 members who have books to their credit with Writer Award-2008 on the club premises on Monday afternoon.
Chaired by JPC President Shawkat Mahmud, the function was addressed, among others, by advisory editor of the Daily Janakantha Toab Khan, acting editor of the Daily Ittefaq Rahat Khan, former JPC president and editor of News Today Reazuddin Ahmed, editor of the Daily Amar Desh Amanullah Kabir, JPC General Secretary Kamal Uddin Sabuj, veteran journalist and litterateur Mohammad Mahfuzullah, convenor of award distribution committee Syed Abdal Ahmed and poet Belal Chowdhury.
Shawkat Mahmud said the club is contributing to establishing Bengali language in every sphere of national life as the number of creative writers is increasing among the club members.
Kamal Uddin Sabuj said books are not only a means of learning, but also a medium of intellectual recreation.
The function was followed by a musical programme.
WASA introduces online billing system

LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser M Anwarul Iqbal yesterday formally inaugurated the online billing system of Dhaka WASA.
"There is no alternative to getting standard service without paying the bill regularly," the adviser said while addressing the inaugural function at the WASA Bhaban.
He said the government is committed to providing a appropriate and standard service for the people.
The adviser called upon the concerned people to come forward to turn the WASA into a corruption-free, transparent, service- oriented and profitable organisation.
He said revenue income of WASA would have increased significantly if they can reduce the system loss from the present rate of 35 percent.
Iqbal said there are around 2.53 lakh customers of the WASA and it earned revenue of Taka 271 crore during the 2006-07 fiscal year and the amount was Taka 45 crore higher than that of the previous fiscal.
The revenue target of WASA has been fixed at Taka 350 crore in the current fiscal, the adviser added.
WASA Chairman Abdullah Harun Pasha and Managing Director Raihanul Abedin also spoke on the occasion.
Chinese co to invest $ 75,735 m in DEPZ

A Hong Kong based Chinese company named M/s. Goldtex Limited will set up textile industry in the Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ).
The 100 percent foreign owned company will invest 75.735 million US dollar and produce textile fabrics. The company will also create employment opportunity for 3,000 Bangladeshi nationals.
An agreement to this effect was signed between the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) and the Goldtex Limited at BEPZA Complex here recently.
AZM Azizur Rahman, General Manager (Investment Promotion) of BEPZA and Kort York Nam, Executive Director of Goldtex Limited have signed the lease agreements on behalf of their respective organisations.
The Executive Chairman of BEPZA and other officials were present on this occasion.
EC announces draft voter list in RCC area

Election Commission (EC) announced the draft voter list of Rajshahi City corporation Area yesterday containing 2,57,700 voters including 1,28,853 females.
According to local EC officials, the lists will be on display simultaneously at all the 30 ward commissioners' office of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) including Boalia and Rajpara thana election offices and District Election office up to March 5 next.
Deputy Election Commissioner Syed Muhammad Musha formally announced the list through handing over a set of the draft roll to the Commissioner of Ward No. 23 Saiduzzaman Khan Mato at the latter's office here this morning.
After circulation of the draft list, applications for necessary correction, objection and demand will be received from the respective voters within the same deadline.
The voters from ward number 1 to 10 have been requested to submit their applications to the Deputy Election Commission office, from 11 to 20 to Additional District Magistrate office and from 20 to 30 to Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) office within the stipulated time.
After necessary correction along with disposal of the received applications within March 20, the final voter list will be announced on March 24 next, Syed Musha added.
