Death anniversary of Sirajul Hossain Khan today

The first death anniversary of eminent politician, journalist and former minister Sirajul Hossain Khan is today (Sunday).

Sirajul Hossain Khan Death Anniversary Observance Committee, formed earlier headed by Dr Mahbub Ullah as its convenor, chalked out elaborate programme to observe the day with due respect.

Family members, friends and well-wishers of late Sirajul Hossain Khan will visit his graveyard at Baniyachong in Habiganj district at 9:00am today and hold a milad and doa mahfil. A discussion meeting will also be held at Susan KG School premises in the afternoon.

CPU Training Course on Environmental Reporting

A 5-day training course on environmental reporting for Bangladesh journalists with the theme "Environment - Reporting the issues currently threatening the globe" kicks off on Sunday in UNB training room.

The course, organized by the Commonwealth Press Union (CPU) in partnership with CPU, Bangladesh Section, will be inaugurated by Chief Adviser's Special Assistant for Environment and Forest Ministry Raja Devashish Roy.

Amanullah Khan, President CPU, Bangladesh Section and Chairman, UNB will deliver the welcome address while members of CPU, Bangladesh Section, Mahbubul Alam, Editor, The Independent; Mahfuz Anam, Editor, The Daily Star; Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, Managing Director and Chief Editor, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and Enayetullah Khan, Editor-in-Chief and Chief Executive, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) will address the participants on various environment issues. John Vidal, Environment Editor, The Guardian, London will be the course facilitator.

The guest speakers who will deliberate over the next few days are Qamrul Islam Siddiqui, President, Bangladesh Water Partne-rship and former secretary on 'Integrated Water Manage-ment and Environment';

Prof. Anwarul Islam, Chief Executive, Wildlife Trust of Bangladesh (WTB) and Professor, Dept. of Zoology, Dhaka University on 'Conservation Education'; Dr. Atiq A. Rahman, Executive Director, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies and Member IPCC on 'Climate Change and Environment: The Bangladesh Perspective'; Dr. Ainun Nishat, Country Director of IUCN, on 'Water and Environment', and Samarendra Karmakar, Director, Bangladesh Meteorological Department on 'Cyclone Preparedness'.

During the field trip planned for the participants to Dohar, Prof. Quazi Quamruzzaman, Chairman of the Trustee Board, Dhaka Community Hospital and Dr. Babar Kabir, Director, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygine Project), BRAC will talk to the participants about the arsenic poisoning issue.

Drama festival in memory of Selim AL-Deen begins

A drama festival dedicated to the memory of Dr Selim Al Deen began at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday.

JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman inaugurated the ten-day festival arranged by the Jahangirnagar Theater.

Sri Lankan minister calls on DU VC

Visiting Sri Lankan Deputy Minister of Higher Education Mohammed Mustaffa on Saurday called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof SMA Faiz at the Senate Bhaban of the university.

During the meeting, they discussed matters of mutual interests specially the issue of admission of Sri Lankan students into the DU.

They also discussed possibilities of exchanging collaborative programmes between the DU and the universities in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vadivel Krishnamoorthy, DU Pro VC AFM Yusuf Haider, dean of Arts Faculty Prof Sadrul Amin, dean of Social Science Faculty Prof Harun-or- Rashid, dean of Science Faculty Prof Tajmeri SA Islam, dean of Business Faculty Prof Serajul Islam and dean of Pharmacy Faculty Prof Abdur Rashid were present on the occasion.

Book on 'Trade and development' published

A book by Syed Jamaluddin titled 'Trade and Development' was published early February this month.

Syed Jamaluddin is currently working as secretary general of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).

Earlier he worked in the finance ministry of the government

and came across trade and development issues. He also worked in Geneva as economic minister of Bangladesh and was directly involved in the Uruguay Round negotiations.

In this capacity, he dealt with WTO, UNCTAD, UNIDO and WIPO.

He served as faculty member of South East University. He writes columns regularly on various economic and trade related issues.

The book 'Trade and Development' contains 68 articles specially on bilateral trade and investment, national budget, regional forum, status of LDCs, WTO issues, PRSP, post MFA challenges, industries, privatization, export, Indo-Bangla trade etc.

The book is available at FBCCI office (Federation Bhaban), 60 Motijheel C/A, 2nd Floor, Dhaka.

The visiting Sri Lankan Deputy Minister of Higher Education Mohamed Mustafa, MP, accompanied by Sri Lankan High Commissioner Vadivel Krishnamoorthy called on Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university yesterday.

On the occasion, Pro VC Prof Yusuf Haider, Arts Faculty Dean Prof Sadrul Amin, Science Faculty Dean Prof Tazmery SA Islam, Business Faculty Dean Prof Sirajul Islam, Social Science Faculty Dean Prof Harun-or-Rashid and Pharmacy Faculty Dean Prof Md Abdur Rashid were present.

During the meeting, they discussed matters of mutual interest specially the possibilities of admission of Sri Lankan students in Dhaka University.

They also discussed the possibilities of establishing exchange and collaborative programmes between Dhaka University and the universities in Sri Lankan.
