Pahela Falgun celebrated
A colourful procession was brought out from the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University marking the Pahela Falgun yesterday. FocusBangla DU Correspondent Young men and women attired in sarees, panjabis and fatuas in vibrant shades of yellow, red and orange welcomed spring, a traditional cultural festival to herald the advent of the Bangla month of Falgun. Different organisations yesterday observed the first day of spring, the queen of all seasons by rendering songs and reciting poetry at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Fine Arts Institution, lawn of DUCSU Building and elsewhere in the country. From the morning, students, couples, young boys and girls from different areas of Dhaka wearing colourful dresses started flocking to the Dhaka University campus to welcome the day. The visitors moved around the campus with their dear and near ones. However, the campus looked like a garden of bloomed flowers as all the spots on the campus were filled up by young women and girls in yellow sarees with red border and hair dotted with flowers and men and boys in traditional pajama and panjabi carrying bouquet of flowers. Revellers were in a jubilant and festive mood as the change in the season seemed to have brought about a change in their moods. The national spring festival committee organised a programme at the Bakultala, where songs, dances and recitation of poems were presented The TSC authority chalked out a two-day long programme of several events like traditional songs, modern songs, folk songs and band songs to mark the occasion. The first day of the two-day long programme was very gorgeous that drew the students most as the programme was aired live by a satellite TV channel. Besides, a number of cultural, fine arts and performing arts organisations-including Chhayanaut, Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts, Nazrul Academy, Sur Dhara, Sur Tirtha, Geetanjali, Khelaghar, National Poetry Council and Sangeet Bhaban-are holding various programmes and activities in the capital. According to tradition, southern breezes should start to blow soon, marking the end of the chilly currents swooping down from the Himalayas, Basanta being the harbinger of warmth and new life. During the spring, the change in nature becomes noticeable, with birds chirping, flowers blooming and trees sprouting new leaves. The festival was arranged to welcome all these changes. Our JU Correspondent add: Basanta Baron- 2008 (spring reception) was celebrated in festive and gorgeous mood at Jahangirnar University (JU) Yesterday to mark the day, the JU authorities chalked out daylong colourful and eye-catching programmes on the campus. Earlier the authorities brought out a colourful rally from the old Arts Faculty and paraded the whole campus and ended at the premises central Shaheed Minar of the university. Students of the University wearing colourful dresses took part in the rally carrying different types of festoons and singing songs. JU Students` Welfare and Advisory centre arranged a fascination cultural ceremony where prominent singers of the country performed their best. JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman inaugurated the function while Pro-VC Prof Moniruzzaman and Treasurer Prof Sayed Abdul Hai, among others, addressed.
