Govt plans 3 lakh tons rice import from Myanmar : Eyes also on Thai, Vietnam markets Staff Reporter The Government has proposed the Myanmar authorities to import 300,000 metric tones of rice from that country annually to off set regular food shortage in the country. Visiting Bangladesh delegation headed by Foreign Secretary M Touhid Hossain at a bilateral meeting made a formal proposal in this regard to the Myanmar delegation led by its Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Kyaw. The meeting between Bangladesh and Myanmar took place in Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar, on Tuesday. This was the 3rd Foreign Office Consultation, a highly placed official sources said in Dhaka yesterday.  |
Make bank loan easy for women entrepreneurs: CA
UNB, Dhaka Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Wednesday spelt out a four-point measure for fair lending to SME sector, with a special focus on helping female entrepreneurs, for flourishing small and medium enterprises in the country. He advised the commercial banks and financial institutions to ease lending procedure and reduce the existing interest rates for small women entrepreneurs. Inaugurating the daylong 2nd National Women SME Entrepreneurs Conference 2008, Dr Fakhruddin, an economist and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, put forward the four steps for creating a fair and sustainable loan system in the Small and Medium Enterprise sector.  |

DU Correspondent Young men and women attired in sarees, panjabis and fatuas in vibrant shades of yellow, red and orange welcomed spring, a traditional cultural festival to herald the advent of the Bangla month of Falgun. Different organisations yesterday observed the first day of spring, the queen of all seasons by rendering songs and reciting poetry at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Fine Arts Institution, lawn of DUCSU Building and elsewhere in the country. From the morning, students, couples, young boys and girls from different areas of Dhaka wearing colourful dresses started flocking to the Dhaka University campus to welcome the day.  |
3 CMP cops sent to jail after remand
UNB, Chittagong Assistant Commissioner of Police SM Mofazzal Haq and two constables arrested from the city in connection with a robbery case were sent to jail hajot when produced before the CMM court yesterday. Police sub-inspector Abul Hossain investigating into the case said significant clues were available during interrogation of Mofazzal about involvement of complainant of the case Farook Ahmed Chowdhury in smuggling of artifacts. Farooq, a dealer of iron scrap, filed the case with Kotwali thana on Monday accusing AC Mofazzal and constables Ehsanul Islam and Mohammad Abdur Rab of robbing at gunpoint Tk 1.  |
