Sheikh Helal, cousin of detained former premier Sheikh Hasina, and another person were yesterday sentenced to serve 7 years in jail in an extortion case instituted under the current drive against corruption.

They are also fined to pay Tk 1 lakh or suffer another 6 months in prison. The convicts are Sheikh Helal and his associate Saiduzzaman.

Both are on the run.

Prosecution story is that "when Sheikh Hasina was in power the accused, on several occasions, realized Tk 2 crore 2 lakh 40 thousand from RCL construction firm".

With the change of time, an officer of the firm, Momtajuddin, sued the duo in Kafrul police station on May 21, 2007.
