Govt mulls suing Hyundai for cracks in Jamuna Bridge

The government will take necessary legal action against the South Korean construction company of Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge as serious cracks have developed in different parts of this major engineering feat within ten years of its construction.
Sources at the Jamuna Multipurpose Authority at Setu Bhaban told The New Nation yesterday that pervasive corruption involving crores of taka was mainly responsible for the faulty construction of the 4.8 kilometer long and 18.5 metre width bridge that connects the capital with the country's northern region.

A senior police officer and two constables were arrested yesterday for
their alleged involvement in a robbery in the port city of Chittagong.
Assistant Commissioner of Police for Panchlaish Zone Abu Saleh Mohammad Mofazzel Haque and two constables-AC's bodyguard Ehsanul Islam and driver Abdur Rob--were arrested for their alleged involvement in the robbery.
A team of Kotwali police, led by sub-inspector Abul Hossain, arrested the three from the AC's office at Panchlaish thana compound at about 3:30am following a complaint over telephone by a businessman.

ACC to extend its drive to Army

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will extend its anti-corruption drive to the army, who are now assisting the present Caretaker Government, to find out the corruption among them.
Head of the visiting delegation of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Danish Parliament Helge Adam Moller disclosed this yesterday quoting the ACC Chairman, with whom he met earlier.
Adam Moller quoted ACC Chairman Lt Gen (Retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury as saying, "The ongoing anticorruption drive will widen to the army." But he did not explain when the drive would be launched.

Hasina sick
UNB, Dhaka
Detained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had high blood pressure in her sub-jail on Monday morning and recovered after a while.
Inspector General (IG) (Prisons) Brigadier Gen Zakir Hossain said as Sheikh Hasina fell sick, the jail authorities called in the head of Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Dr Abul Kashem and the head of Cardiology Department Dr Lutfur Rahman for her checkup.
But, he said, Hasina refused to receive treatment from the doctors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Democrat Barack Obama is riding a burst of momentum into Tuesday's presidential nominating contests with a string of weekend wins, while Republican John McCain received praise from onetime rival President George W. Bush as he tries to woo conservatives.
Locked in a deadlocked state-by-state battle with Obama for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton replaced her campaign manager after Saturday's losses to the Illinois senator.
Obama, who would be the first black president, scored a win in Maine on Sunday after sweeping caucuses in Louisiana, Nebraska and Washington a day earlier.

Saraswati Puja celebrated

Saraswati Puja, one of the religious festivals of the Hindu community, was celebrated in the country with fanfare and festivity seeking blessings of the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, music and art.
The Hindu devotees, particularly the students, celebrated the Puja also known as 'Bani Archana' at various educational institutions and their houses.
Earlier, the President in a message expressed hope that the members of the Hindu community in their work and thoughts would reflect the ideals and spirit with which they adore the goddess of knowledge and wisdom.
