The High Court Sunday granted ad interim bail to former energy secretary Dr Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury in connection with a power plant graft case.

Granting interim bail following a petition, a division bench comprising Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Shahidul Islam, issued rule upon the government to explain why the petitioner should not be granted regular bail.

Over fortnight ago, Dr Towfiq was sent to jail after he surrendered to a Dhaka court in a case filed for Tk 3 crore graft during the setting up of a barge-mount power plant in Khulna in which detained ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also an accused.

Barrister Rafique-ul Huq appeared for Dr Towfiq.
