Pry textbooks distributed

SHERPUR, Jan 30: About two lakh books will be distributed free of cost among 74,000 students of primary schools in three Upazilas of the district. District Primary Education Office sources said, students of 162 government, 63 registered, 61community and 157 NGO-run primary schools will get the books. Upazila Education Offices have already distributed books among the students of the government, registered and community primary schools, reports BSS.



Two houses gutted in Meherpur

MEHERPUR, Jan 30: Two houses were gutted in a fire at Amjhupi village under Meherpur Sadar Upazila on Monday night. Two people were injured in the fire while they were trying to extinguish the blaze. Fire service sources said the fire broke out from an electric short circuit. Fire fighting units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control, reports BSS.



One electrocuted in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Jan 30: A lineman of Jamalpur Palli Bidyut Samity was electrocuted in Melandah Upazila on Monday evening. Police said, the lineman, Ariful Islam, 26, while setting up an electric transformer at Bandharoha village came into touch with a live electric wire at around 3.30 PM on Monday. Local people rushed Arif to hospital, but he succumbed on the way. An unnatural death case was filed in this connection, reports BSS.



Warm clothes distributed

CHUADANGA, Jan 30: Warm cloths were distributed among 364 poor and destitute people of Jibannagar Pourashava areas and four other unions of Jibannagar Upazila on Sunday. A total of 244 pieces of blankets and 120 pieces of wrappers were distributed among the cold-hit people, reports BSS.



3 cheats arrested

SATKHIRA, Jan 30: Three alleged cheats were arrested for blackmailing at Ghutirdanga area under Sadar Upazila of the district on Sunday. Police said the arrested persons were identified as Robiul Islam, 27, son of Sultan Dhali of Mahajonpur village under Asashuni Upazila, Golam Mostofa, 25 son of Abdus Samad Morol of Kadabati village and Abdul Jalil, 26 son of Anser Sarder of Gunakorkati village, reports BSS.



Indian saree seized

BOGRA, Jan 30: Members of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) of Naogaon 28 Rifle Battalion seized 170 pices of smuggled Indian sarees from a coach at Puran Bogra point on the Naogaon-Bogra highway in the outskirts of Bogra town on Sunday afternoon. Police and BDR sources said, acting on a tip off, a patrol party of BDR intercepted a Dhaka bound coach from Naogaon at the point and seized the smuggled Indian saree from the coach. Later, BDR filed a case in this connection with the concerned police station, the sources said, reports BSS.



Obituary

NILPHAMARI, Jan 30: Maulana Mozaharul Islam, Principal of Domar Islamia Senior Madrasa, died here of a massive cardiac arrest on Sunday at the age of 48. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. He was buried at his family graveyard at Village Boro gacha under Domar Upazila in the district following a Namaz-e-janaza, reports BSS.
