Hiding wealth info: Ex power secy Akhter jailed for 10 years Staff Reporter Detained former power secretary Engineer ANH Akhter Hossain was sentenced 10 years to prison by a special court yesterday for concealing information about his assets and amassing huge wealth through illegal means. Delivering the judgment, judge Amal Kumar Roy of the special court-2 at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex, also fined him Tk 1,00,000, in default to suffer three months more in jail. Besides, the court, trying high profile corruption suspects, sentenced Akhter's wife Nazneen Akhtar to three years in prison with fine of Tk 50,000 for aiding and abetting her husband in amassing property illegally. The court also asked the government to confiscate the wealth of Akhtar and his wife, which were acquired illegally and deposit to the national coffer. On May 31 last year, the Anti-Corruption Commission assistant director Mahbubul Alam lodged the case against Akhter Hossain and his wife with Uttara Police Station for concealing information of wealth worth over Tk 2.23 crore in the statement submitted to the ACC earlier. Akhter Hossain is now in jail, while his wife Nazneen Akhter is absconding.
