Expulsion of Asian Energy demanded

Staff Reporter

The activities that the Asia Energy are doing in the country to get the ownership of the Phulbari Coal Mine would spread corruption and produce brokers in the country.

Leaders of the Oil-Gas-Mineral Resources and Electricity-Port Protection National committee said this yesterday demanding ouster of the Asia Energy from the country.

They also asked the Anti Corruption Commission to start investigation and trial of former energy adviser Mahmudur Rahman alleging his involvement in corruption.

Leaders of the committee said this yesterday at a press conference on 'Open Pit Mining--Experience of India and Coal Policy' at the National Press Club.

Justice Golam Rabbani, Engineer Sheikh Mohammad Shahidullah, convenor of the committee, member secretary Prof Anu Mohammad, Prof M Shamsul Alam, and Engineer Enamul Haque, among others, spoke at the conference.

Justice Golam Rabbani said, "Mahamudur Rahman may be corrupt. The ACC should investigate about his wealth and try him for corruption."

Speakers said Open Pit Mining for extracting coal from the country's mines was not feasible for the country in any circumstance.

They urged the government to ensure cent percent ownership of the people on the coal of the country for the proper use of the resource by using it and producing electricity.

They also urged the Government to prepare a coal policy emitting the chances of open pit mining and export of coal.
