Go-ahead for resuming stalled trial of Hasina: Appellate Division stays High Court order, affected On-going hearing on Hasina’s writ at HC bench will continue
Staff Reporter The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday stayed a High Court order halting proceedings of a Tk 3 crore extortion case against detained Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the lower Court. As per Supreme Court's latest order the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court could go ahead with the trial of Sheikh Hasina and her co-accused under the emergency power rules (EPR). The Full Bench of the Supreme Court chaired by Acting Chief Justice M Fazlul Karim, passed order granting the Government leave to appeal against the High Court orders.  |
Ajam Chowdhury denies having sued Hasina: 'I filed case against Sheikh Selim as he took money from me’

Businessman Azam J Chowdhury, the plaintiff of the extortion case against Sheikh Hasina, yesterday denied having filed any case against the former prime minister and Awami League president although Sheikh Hasina has been in jail over the last six months being arrested in the same case. Even, Azam J Chowdhury said he had no complain against Sheikh Hasina. He also wanted to know from journalists why attempt was made to make him a villain.  |
Fire in gas pipeline on Turag after explosion: Gas supply to parts of city

A devastating fire broke out exploding a high-pressure gas pipeline of Titas Gas Limited beneath the Turag river at Salehpur near Aminbazar yesterday morning. Following the incident, gas supply to some parts of Dhaka city was suspended. Witnesses said the fire broke out in the pipeline following an explosion with massive sound after a sand-loaded trawler collided with the high-pressure gas pipeline underneath the Turag river at about 8:00am. The explosion in the gas pipeline caused widespread panic among the people living in surrounding areas.  |
DU normal, students back to classes

The Dhaka University, where a hostile situation prevailed for five months over a trifle matter between the Army and the students at the Gymnasium playground on August 20 has become normal as all the detainees were freed and cases were withdrawn. A festive mood prevailed on the campus and the teachers and students are attentive to the academic activities. Meanwhile, the teachers who were on agitation so long to free the incarcerated teachers and the students withdrew their programmes by pulling down the black flag hoisted atop the Arts Faculty Building.  |
Millions converge on Turag bank as Biswa Ijtema begins today

Biswa Ijtema, the second-largest congregation of world Muslims after Hajj, begins today on the bank of Turag River at Tongi industrial town with countless devotees thronging on the vast venue for a three-day annul prayer session. The Government has completed all the Ijtema-related preparations as around 10 lakhs (a million) devotees have already converged on the bank of Turag, braving severe cold caused by current cold spell, to attend the Biswa Ijtema. Pandels have been set up on 160-square-acre land at the site on the outskirts of the capital.  |
Cold, drizzles disrupt normal life
BSS, Dhaka It was cold, dank and windy since Wednesday night disrupting normal life across the country as the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature narrowed down with the mating of a westerly low pressure and easterly winds. Met office sources said the situation may continue and there is likely to be light rains and drizzles today as the dank weather may spread from the worst-affected north to the south and the east down the central region. The northwest may have a slow down in the rains after having the worst of it at places.  |
