Six hurt in Comilla clash

COMILLA, Jan 23: Six people were injured in a clash between two groups of people at Bijoypur in Sadar South Upazila on Friday over damaging an idol of a temple. Police quoting local people said terrorists swooped on Kalibari Shib Mondir and damaged its Gouro Nitai idol in the morning following a dispute over a piece of land of the temple. Later, a clash was ensued between the members of temple committee and local terrorists, leaving six people injured. Three of the injured were admitted to Local Hospital. Police on information rushed to the spot and arrested two people - Jahangir and Shah Alam - in this connection, reports UNB.



2 get 19 yrs RI for murder

SATKHIRA, Jan 23: A court here on Thursday convicted two men and sentenced them to 19 years rigorous imprisonment each in the sensational minor boy Babu murder case. The convicts Mostafizur Rahman Dolon, 40, of Gomantoli village and Nesar Ali Sarder, 42, of Abadchandipur village in Shyamnagar Upazila were also fined Tk 15,000 each, in default, to suffer one and half years RI more. According to the prosecution, the convicts abducted Babu, 8, son of Shahadat Gazi of Gomantoli village and strangulated him to death on November 2, 2005, reports UNB.



21 shops gutted in Sylhet

SYLHET, Jan 23: Twenty-one shops were gutted in a fierce fire that broke out at Bateshwar Bazar in Sadar Upazila on Thursday morning. Witnesses said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop and soon engulfed the nearby shops, burning down huge cash and valuables. On information, Army and firefighters put out the flame after several hours of frantic efforts with the help of local people. The affected shopkeepers claimed that cash and valuables worth about Tk 60 lakh were gutted in the fire, reports UNB.



Police barracks constructed

RANGAMATI, Jan 23: A four-storied police barracks has been constructed in new police line area in the district at a cost of Tk 3.82 crore. Additional IGP of Police Naba Bikram Kishor Tripura inaugurated the barracks on Friday. Public Works Department officials said the new barracks would be able to accommodate 400 policemen. Earlier, the Additional IGP inaugurated construction work of the Officers' Mess in the district, being constructed at a cost of Tk 1 crore, reports UNB.



Valuables looted

SHARIATPUR, Jan 23: Dacoits looted cash and valuables worth Tk 11 lakh from seven houses at Purbakandi village in Damudya upazila early on Thursday leaving a man injured. Local people said the gang numbering 20/25 first entered the house of Mokbul Ostagar at about 2.30 AM. They tied him up and looted valuables at gunpoint. Later, they stormed into the six adjoining houses one after another and took away the cash and valuables. The bandits at one stage stabbed one Saidul Islam, 38, when he tried to resist them. He was admitted to Sadar Hospital. Separate cases were filed with the police, reports UNB.



210 sacks fertilizer seized in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR, Jan 23: Police seized 210 sacks of urea fertilizer from a truck at Uchitpur on Dinajpur-Gobindaganj Highway on Thursday. On secret information, Chirirbandar thana police waylaid the truck at the point and seized the urea at about 4 PM. None was arrested in this connection as the driver and helper of the truck fled the scene sensing the presence of the law enforcers. A case was filed, reports UNB.
