Proper application of law to resist money laundering underscored

Speakers at an anti-money-laundering workshop opined that the incidents of money laundering were taking place because of use and flow of illegal money.

Urging all officials concerned including bankers to become more active in imposition anti money laundering law, they said it is possible to resist corruption of the law concerned is applied appositely and efficiently.

Deputy Commissioner of the district Mohammad Nurul Amin as chief guest delivered his speech at the function on "Anti Money Launderign Affairs Workshop' held on Saturday (Jan 19) at the auditorium of Rangamati Hill District Council, AKM Harunur Rashid, Senior Vice President of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited presided over the daylong workshop.

Deputy Director Mohammed Ibrahim Bhuiyan, Assistant Director Asim Kumar Chwodhury of Bangladesh Bank, Mohammed Rafiqul Islam, Senior Vice President of Islami Bank Training and Research Academy, Mohammed Saleh Uddin, Deputy Post Master General as special guest spoke at the function organised by Rangamati Branch, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited.

The anti-money laundering law is being imposed effectively since January 11, 2007 though the act concerned was enacted in 2002, the speakers said.

The money laundering has a covered destructive impact on economy, safety and social situation of the country and it attracts criminals including black marketers, drug dealers, terrorists and illegal arms traders to commit crimes in the society, they added.

Besides, Mohammed Arifur Rahman, Manager, Mohammed Refayet Hossain, Senior officer and Mohammed Akter Uj Jaman, investment officer of the Islami Bank Rangamati branch addressed here.

A total of 46 officers from 36 branches of 8 different banks working at 10 Upazilas of the district took part at the workshop, a press release signed by Md, Arifur Rahman, Manager, Rangamati branch said.

BRCS distributes blankets among distressed people in Gaibandha

Bangladesh Red Crecent Society (BRCS), district unit, has taken up a plan to distribute blankets among the poor, distressed and river-erosion affected people in the district in order to save them from cold wave.

Sources said, a total number of 1500 blankets would be distributed among the cold-hit victims in the district under this programme.

An inaugural function was held at Al-Forkan Kinder Garden (AFKG) under Boali Union of Sadar Upazila in the district on Saturday with Faruqul Islam, Secretary of BRCS district unit in the chair.

Deputy Commissioner Quazi Md. Anworul Hakim addressed the function and formally distributed the blankets among the cold victims of the union as chief guest. The function was also addressed, among others, by social workers Sadrul Kabir Angur, Shaik Samad Azad and Mohfizul Islam, Principal of AFKG.

As many as 300 blankets were distributed among the cold-hit victims of the union in this function.

Inauguration of project "Our dev in our participation" Jan 26



The inaugural function of a project on "Our Development in Our Participation" will be held on January 26 at Mymensingh Muslim Institute, Mymensingh at 12 noon.

PRDS, Jubo Samajer Alo and Alor Dishari have jointly organised their programme.

One arrested with fake Indian currency in Satkhira

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (BSS) arrested a person from Chandpur area under Devhata upazila in the district on Monday and seized 11,000 fake Indian Rupee from his possession.

The arrested person was identified as Ahmad Ali, 42, of Sakhipur of Devhata upazila.

Sources said, acting on a tip-off, members of the elite force conducted a drive at Chandpur area and arrested Ahmad Ali and seized 22 fake Indian currency notes of five hundred denomination after searching his body.

Workshop on 'Water sanitation and hygiene' held in Baraigram

A day-long workshop on "Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme was held at Panchbaria High School premises on January 9 under the joint auspices of Nagar Union Parishad (U.P.) and non-government organisation (N.G.O) BRAC of Baraigram Upazila in Natore district.

The workshop was presided over by Nagar Union Parishad (U.P. Chairman Md Noushad Ali (Alphu). The Chief Guest was Sub-Assistant Engineer of Upazila Public Health Engineering Department, Md Zohurul Islam and a special guest was Regional Manager of BRAC, Natore Md Mohsin Ali in the workshop.

It was also addressed, among others, by Assistant Principal of Dhanaidah Madrasha Md Nazrul Islam, Headmaster of Panchbaria High School Md Rahimul Haque, elite Md Shahidul Islam, Md Shajahan Ali, Mukammel Hossain At the beginning of the workshop, BRAC (WASH) Manager of Baraigram Unit Md Forhad Ali spoke on safe water, sanitation, hygiene, etc. The workshop was conducted by BRAC Officer Md Golam Mostafa.

Six hurt in Comilla clash

COMILLA, Jan 23: Six people were injured in a clash between two groups of people at Bijoypur in Sadar South Upazila on Friday over damaging an idol of a temple. Police quoting local people said terrorists swooped on Kalibari Shib Mondir and damaged its Gouro Nitai idol in the morning following a dispute over a piece of land of the temple. Later, a clash was ensued between the members of temple committee and local terrorists, leaving six people injured. Three of the injured were admitted to Local Hospital. Police on information rushed to the spot and arrested two people - Jahangir and Shah Alam - in this connection, reports UNB.



2 get 19 yrs RI for murder

SATKHIRA, Jan 23: A court here on Thursday convicted two men and sentenced them to 19 years rigorous imprisonment each in the sensational minor boy Babu murder case. The convicts Mostafizur Rahman Dolon, 40, of Gomantoli village and Nesar Ali Sarder, 42, of Abadchandipur village in Shyamnagar Upazila were also fined Tk 15,000 each, in default, to suffer one and half years RI more. According to the prosecution, the convicts abducted Babu, 8, son of Shahadat Gazi of Gomantoli village and strangulated him to death on November 2, 2005, reports UNB.



21 shops gutted in Sylhet

SYLHET, Jan 23: Twenty-one shops were gutted in a fierce fire that broke out at Bateshwar Bazar in Sadar Upazila on Thursday morning. Witnesses said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop and soon engulfed the nearby shops, burning down huge cash and valuables. On information, Army and firefighters put out the flame after several hours of frantic efforts with the help of local people. The affected shopkeepers claimed that cash and valuables worth about Tk 60 lakh were gutted in the fire, reports UNB.



Police barracks constructed

RANGAMATI, Jan 23: A four-storied police barracks has been constructed in new police line area in the district at a cost of Tk 3.82 crore. Additional IGP of Police Naba Bikram Kishor Tripura inaugurated the barracks on Friday. Public Works Department officials said the new barracks would be able to accommodate 400 policemen. Earlier, the Additional IGP inaugurated construction work of the Officers' Mess in the district, being constructed at a cost of Tk 1 crore, reports UNB.



Valuables looted

SHARIATPUR, Jan 23: Dacoits looted cash and valuables worth Tk 11 lakh from seven houses at Purbakandi village in Damudya upazila early on Thursday leaving a man injured. Local people said the gang numbering 20/25 first entered the house of Mokbul Ostagar at about 2.30 AM. They tied him up and looted valuables at gunpoint. Later, they stormed into the six adjoining houses one after another and took away the cash and valuables. The bandits at one stage stabbed one Saidul Islam, 38, when he tried to resist them. He was admitted to Sadar Hospital. Separate cases were filed with the police, reports UNB.



210 sacks fertilizer seized in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR, Jan 23: Police seized 210 sacks of urea fertilizer from a truck at Uchitpur on Dinajpur-Gobindaganj Highway on Thursday. On secret information, Chirirbandar thana police waylaid the truck at the point and seized the urea at about 4 PM. None was arrested in this connection as the driver and helper of the truck fled the scene sensing the presence of the law enforcers. A case was filed, reports UNB.
