Qulkhwani of Tayeba Majumder held

Qulkhwani of late Tayeba Majumder, mother of former Prime Ministry Khaleda Zia, was held at her Balubari residence in the district town after Asr prayers Monday.
Tayeba's two sons Sayeed Iskander and Shamim Iskander, their family members, BNP joint secretary general Nazrul Islam Khan, office secretary Rizvi Ahmed, former BNP MP Moazzem Hossain and scores of BNP leaders, activists and well-wishers were present at the qul.
The mourners also offered special prayers at the grave of late Tayeba Majumder seeking eternal peace of her departed soul.
Tayeba Majumder died at Zia Heart Foundation in Dinajpur Friday night at the age of 87.
Pak Naval Chief arrives in city

Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral M Afzal Tahir arrived here on Monday on a six-day visit to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Navy chief Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam and Pakistan High Commissioner in Dhaka Alamgir Babar received the Pakistan Navy chief and his entourage at Zia International Airport.
During his stay in Bangladesh, Admiral Tahir will place wreath at Shikha Anirban at Dhaka Cantonment and call on President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed.
Admiral Tahir will also meet the Naval chief, Army Chief, Air Chief, Defence Secretary and the Principal Staff Officer of Bangladesh Armed Forces at their respective offices.
He will visit the naval bases and establishments of Bangladesh Navy in Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna.
The Pakistani Navy Chief is expected to leave Dhaka on January 26, an ISPR release said.
Pak Navy Chief arrives
Chief of Naval Staff of Pakistan Navy Admiral M Afzal Tahir arrived in Dhaka on Monday for a 6-day visit to Bangladesh. Chief of Naval Staff of Bangladesh Navy Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam and Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alamgir Babar received him at Zia International Airport, says a ISPR press release.
During his visit in Bangladesh he will lay floral wreath at Shikha Anirban in Dhaka Cantonment. His programmes also included courtesy call on President Professor Dr. Iajuddiun Ahmed at Bangabhaban and Chief Adviser Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed at his office.

Bird flu: 4965 chickens culled in Natore

Some 4,965 chickens were culled and 3,750 eggs destroyed at a poultry farm at Anandanagar in Gurudaspur upazila on Sunday night after detection of Avian Influenza in the farm.
Owner of the farm Abul Kalam Azad contacted with the local Livestock Department when his chickens started dying few says back.
Later, a livestock official collected sample of some dead chickens and eggs from the farm and sent those to Joypurhat Laboratory for test.
Later, the chickens were culled and eggs destroyed when the laboratory sent report of detection of Avian Influenza on Sunday. The culled chickens and eggs were dumped under the soil in presence of the senior officials on the same night.
Deputy Commissioner SM Ehsan Kabir when contacted said that necessary measures have been taken to check the spread of the bird flu in the district.
Outlaw killed in Pabna crossfire

An outlaw leader was killed in an encounter between his cohorts and a joint team of RAB and police at Ramjibonpur in Sujanagar upazila Monday afternoon.
The dead was identified as Badal alias Nabo, 35, chief of newly formed banned outfit Maobadi Sangha Bangladesh and regional commander of Purba Bangla Sarbahara Party. He was an accused of 25 cases including nine murder cases, RAB sources said.
A RAB source said a joint team of RAB and police cordoned off Ramjibonpur ground where the outlawed members were holding a clandestine meeting at about 4pm.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the extremists started firing on them that triggered a gun battle.
"All the sangha members managed to escape except Badal. He caught in the crossfire and died on the spot," said a spot account of the shootout.
Two police members were also injured in the encounter.
An one-barrel gun, one shutter gun, one light gun (LG) and two bullets were also recovered from the scene.
Dean election at BSMMU held

Election to the deans of four faculties of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University (BSMMU) was held yesterday.
The four faculties are Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Surgery, Faculty of Basic Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry.
Prof KMHS Sirajul Huq in the Faculty of Medicine, Prof Dr Mohammad Saiful Islam in the Faculty of Surgery, Prof M Iqbal Arsalan in the Faculty of Basic Medicine, and Prof Matiur Rahman Molla in the Faculty of Dentistry were elected receiving highest number of votes in the election.
Nine teachers of the university contested in the dean election. A total of 347, out of 372 teachers of the university cast their ballots in the election. Casting of ballots continued up to 2:00pm starting from 9:00am. The election was held in a spontaneous and peaceful atmosphere.
BSMMU Registrar Muhammad Abdul Gafur conducted the election as the election commissioner, while Inspector of Colleges and Postgraduate Institutes of the university Akram Hossain was presiding officer.
It may be mentioned that BSMMU has set an example by using transparent ballot boxes in the dean election for the first time in Bangladesh.
