Hasina indicted in extortion case: Hasina says, I was implicated as I refused a deal allowing military dictatorship to take over and become the president of the country

A Court in Dhaka city yesterday indicted detained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Tk 3 crore extortion case.
Her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, now residing in London, and cousin and former Minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim are the co-accused in the case filed by Azam J Chowdhury, Managing Director of East Coast Trading Pvt. Ltd., alleging that she had forced him to pay Tk 3 crore extortion money for a contract to set up an electricity plant.
The charge was framed against Sheikh Rehana in absentia.

CA presides over high level meet: DU teachers, students to be freed tomorrow
DU Correspondent
The government will release the detained Dhaka University teachers and students ending the legal process within Tuesday, said Education Adviser Prof Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman.
Addressing a press conference at a city hospital, he said whatever the verdict of the court the detainees would be released soon and they would remain in their respective posts.
Sources said the decision was taken following a high level meeting held at the Chief Adviser office yesterday noon.

ACC sues Babar over hidden wealth
UNB, Dhaka
The Anti-Corruption Commission Sunday filed a case against detained former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar for concealing wealth information and amassing assets beyond his known sources of income.
ACC assistant director Mirza Jahidul Alam filed first-information report (FIR) with Ramna police station alleging that the former home minister amassed wealth over Tk 7 crore “by illegal means”.
He was sued under section 26(2), (27)(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004 and section 15(Gha)(5) of the Emergency Power Rules 2007.

Bijoy TV scam case: Charge framed against Mayor Mohiuddin

Divisional Special Court here in the port city today framed charges of public fund plundering against the Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and two other co-accused.
SM Solaiman, judge of the special court, framed charges against the Mayor, former Chief Executive Officer [CEO] Imtiaz Hossain and Chief Engineer [CE] Moktar Alam in the case of defalcating more than Tk17 million by running Bijoy TV.
All three accused were produced before the court during a marathon session of arguments between defence lawyers and public prosecutor.

3rd round gas block bidding first priority: Tri-nation gas pipeline favoured
UNB, Dhaka
Dr. M Tamim, the newly appointed Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, Sunday said his priority would be to expedite the process of inviting international bids for hydrocarbon exploration in the country's deep sea territory.
"This is one of my priority areas as the country has been facing gas shortage… many thought the country's natural gas will be depleted within 10-15 years. But I don't agree with them if we take steps for more exploration," he told reporters after taking charge of the Energy Division of the Power, Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry.

JU tense: Students leaving dormitories

A tense situation is prevailing among the students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) following the clash between the two rival groups of students belonging to Jatiytabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) disrupting the academic atmosphere.
Residential students have started to leave their dormitories as the administration failed to ensure their security. Though the authorities have deployed large number of members of the law enforcing agencies at different points of the university, the rival groups of students locked in skirmishing at intervals.
