Training on Islamic Banking by Prime Bank starts today

Staff Reporter

Islamic Banking is a growing trend, not only in Muslim countries but also successfully implemented by many non-Muslim multinational banks across the world, said Islamic Banking expert Dr Muhammad Kabir Hassan.

"Islamic Banking system is still at its primary stage in Bangladesh, despite holding vital potential to flourish. It is because of lack of academic training and technical knowledge among bankers and Shariah experts," he said.

He was addressing a press conference yesterday to inaugurate a five-day long training programme on Islamic Banking Supervision, Basel-II and Capital Adequacy, to start today in the city by the Prime Bank Training Institute.

"In the training, I will try to advocate business profitability in Islamic Banking System in Bangladesh to the participants from various banks in Bangladesh. In the meantime, I will also learn their field level experiences and difficulties," added by Dr Kabir. He will train local banking staffs as the main resource person.

Senior executives of six Islamic Banks and nine other conventional banks, having Islamic Banking branches including Prime Bank, will take part in the Training Programme.

Azam J Chowdhury, Chairman of Prime Bank Limited inaugurated the function as Chief Guest. Managing Director M Shahjahan Bhuiyan, Deputy Managing Director Nasiruddin Ahmed of Prime Bank, Abdul Awal Sarker, DGM in charge of Islamic Banking Department, Bangladesh Bank and Dr M Kabir Hassan, Professor of New Orleans University, USA and resource person of the Training Course spoke on the occasion.
