Simeone takes charge at River Plate

AFP, Buenos Aires

Diego Simeone, the man who famously tangled with David Beckham at the 1998 World Cup, was named the new coach of Argentinian side River Plate on Saturday.

Simeone takes over from Daniel Passarella who quit in November.

The 37-year-old former international, who played club football for Sevilla and Atletico Madrid in Spain and for Inter Milan and Lazio in Rome, collapsed to the ground after tangling with Beckham in the highly-charged 1998 World Cup quarter-final.

The Englishman was red-carded for kicking Simeone before Argentina went on to win the game.
