Upholding the Spirit of Victory Day

Kazi Liakat Hossain

The Nation is celebrating 36th anniversary of its Victory Day today with a heavy heart and gloomy face, because of recent Sidr (the devastating cyclone) that took away many lives and properties of southern belt general people of the country. On this day the gallant Freedom Fighters liberated the country from the occupation forces. Actually, it was Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect and Father of the Nation, whose great leadership and dynamism inspired the otherwise innocent, harmless teeming millions to stand as a solid rock in those dark days of the 9 months holy War of Liberation. At this critical juncture when the nation appears to be divided on political lines, many pertinent questions crowd the minds of the people of the land recalling atrocities committed by the Pakistani occupation forces leading to a calamitous crisis unprecedented in modern history.

After a nine months war mighty Bengali Nation snatched away victory at a heavy cost. But even in this democratic era the nation is plagued and haunted by forces opposed to our glorious Liberation War.

On the other hand, there is sign of unity of thought and action. Politics has became a costly game and completely commercialised for the benefit of those self-certified patriots who are destroying the moral fabric and body politics of Benagali Nation.

Hats off to our Caretaker Government & Armed Forces whose active participation to curb political crisis by arresting corrupt politicians and black-money holders and dishonest businessmen and to hold free and fair national election in December, 2008. The present Caretaker Govt. has taken manifold programmes to curb all sorts of indiscipline/anarchy and economic development of the country which has been praised by everybody. But the recent rockets high price, of essential commodities- particularly rice, pulse, potato, soyabean oil, flour, baby food, etc. has brought the Govt. under criticism.

Though CG trying its best to bring it under control at any cost.

Another unholy incident that happened, when Jamaat-e-Islam political leaders have made some audacious remarks against Liberation War & Freedom Fighters. It goes against the prestige and dignity of the Freedom Fighters and martyrs and even against our hard earned independent country. These anti-liberation forces and collaborators should be brought under trial, before the Special Tribunal. If we look at the previous history of 2nd World War, the killers (Hitler's followers) who persecuted and killed 60 lakh Jews, but still they are (the killers) being brought under trial. So, in our country the collaborators, Rajakers, Al-Badrs, Al-Shams should immediately be brought to book.

This is the responsibility of the present Govt., if we want to show real respect to our martayred soldiers, Bir Shrestha Fl. Lt. late Motiur Rahman and Bir Shrestha late Sipahi Hamidur Rahman and many unknown martyred Freedom Fighters, who sacrificed their lives for liberation of the motherland. If it is done the souls of the martyred Freedom Righters will rest in eternal peace. So we should say victory was achieved but economic victory yet to be achieved.

Had the four-party alliance Govt. and Awami League Govt. followed the ideals of Father of the Nation and even Freedom Fighter late President Ziaur Rahman? We earlier mentioned that plutocracy was prevailing in Bangladesh. The Government was being ruled by the tycoons and corrupt business syndicate not sufficiently educated person.

The time has come for us that the new Caretaker Government had declared Jehad (war) against corruption, nepotism, terrorism and dishonesty in political circle. There is now a ray of hope to overcome these unholy incidents by the Caretaker Government.

The Victory Day has come this year wearing a gloomy look because of recent cyclone Sidr which has battered the Southern part of Bangladesh, making Bangladesh economically weaker. With a view to making the country economically developed, major political parties and our gallant Armed Forces must come forward as they are showing their sincerity and hard labour in cyclone affected areas.

Many people opined that the recent steps taken by the (CG) Caretaker Government are praiseworthy and it will clear the cloudy atmosphere from the political arena and next National Election will be free and fair. If the present Government can hold the election free and fair the fruits of democracy may be achieved. We sincerely do believe that CG (Caretaker Government) will be able to hold a free and fair national election next year. If they can't do it, then this will jeopardise our hard earned unity and independence.
