Bangladesh face Northern Knights in 1st warm-up match today

The visiting Bangladesh national cricket team faces Northern Knights today in the first warm-up match at Seddon Park in New Zealand.

The match will start at 12:00pm (7:00am Bangladesh Standard Time) and each team will be allowed to field 12 players. Opening batsman Javed Omar, Mehrab Hossain (Jr) and pace bowler Nazmul Hossain have been left out of the Bangladesh 12.

James Marshall will lead the Northern Knights in absence of regular skipper Daniel Vettori who is in Australia leading the Black Caps in the Chappell-Hadlee series.

All the batsmen of the Tigers Saturday had extended nets. Besides, the bowlers bowled for a lengthy spell to get into the groove of match conditions.

The Tigers will play the Knights again Tuesday (Dec 18) in the 2nd warm-up match and then travel to Auckland on December 21 to play the Auckland Aces in their 3rd and last warm-up.

Chittgaong take overall 193-run lead over Rajshahi on 2nd day

Chittagong Division took overall 193 runs lead over joint league leaders Rajshahi Division on the second day of the 8th round four-day match of the Ispahani Mirzapore Tea 9th National Cricket League at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium on Saturday.

Replying to Chittagong Division's first innings 198 runs, hosts Rajshahi Division resumed their innings with 24 for 2 and were dismissed cheaply for 118 runs in 57.2 overs to trail by 80 runs in the first innings.

Skipper Khaled Mashud Pilot scored team highest 25 runs off 90 balls with two fours. Shakil Haider (21), Nayeem Islam (14) and Farhad Hossain (11) were the only other Rajshahi batsmen who reached double figure.

Mohammad Younus grabbed four Rajshahi wickets for 22 runs in 11 overs with five maidens while national colour pacer Tareq Aziz Khan took three wickets for 53 runs.

In reply, Chittagong Division opened their second innings in the afternoon and scored 113 for 3 in 35 overs at stums on the day.

Opener Gazi Salahuddin scored 49 runs off 67 balls with eight fours while another opener Masumuddowlah made 28 with two boundaries.

At the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, holders Dhaka Division scored 262 runs for all in 110.1 overs in the first innings against Basiral Division on the second day of the 8th round four-day match today.

Resuming batting with 215 for 6, Dhaka were forced to fold the innings adding another 47 runs in 27.1 overs.

Spinner Mosharaf Hossain Rubel and national colour pacer cum lower order batsman Mohammad Sharif contributed 96 runs in the 7th wicket stand to carry the Dhaka Division total to a respectable position.

Night watch batsman Mohammad Sharif (30) scored team highest 57 runs off 169 balls with four boundaries while another night watch batsman Mosharaf Hossain Rubel (35) made a patient 40 runs off 149 deliveries with one four and a six. Nadif Chowdhury (39), Mehrab Hossain (33), Al-Shahriar (16), Uttam Sarkar (16) and Mahmudullah Riad (12) were the other notable scorers for Dhaka Division.

Tariqul Islam grabbed three wickets for 85 runs while Sajedul Islam, Talha Jubaer and Arafat Salauddin took two wickets each for 45, 46 and 57 runs respectively.

In reply, Barisal Division were struggling at 152 for 7 in 62 overs despite making a good start scoring 100 runs in the opening stand.



Opener Nasiruddin Faruk scored 61 runs off 113 balls with eight hits to the fence while skipper Shahriar Nafees made 48 off 105 balls that included six boundaries.

National spinner Mohammad Rafique claimed three wickets for 45 runs in 18 overs with three maidens.

Mahmudullah Riyad, Mosharaf Hossain Rubel, Mahbubul Alam Robin and Mohammad Sharif took one wicket each for 14, 21, 32 and 33 runs respectively.

Golam Rahman, who resumed batting with 76, scored 85 runs off 314 balls with seven fours while his brother Golam Mabud made a polished 53 off 85 balls with nine fours.

Murad Khan captured four wickets for 79 runs while Rabiul Islam and Aslam Khan took three wickets each.

In reply, hosts Khulna Division also responded brilliantly to score 193 for 1 in 56 overs with opener Imrul Kayes batting on 87.

Army, Navy reach in final of Victory Day Volleyball

Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh Navy entered the final of the Victory Day Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

In the day's first semifinal, Bangladesh Navy beat Bangladesh Air Force by 3-2 sets at the Dhaka Volleyball Stadium. In the day's second semifinal, Bangladesh Army defeated Bangladesh Rifles by 3-1 sets at the same venue. Tomorrow Bangladesh Army will face Bangladesh Navy in the final at 3.00 PM at the same venue.

BFF donates over Tk 9 lakh for cyclone victims



UNB, Dhaka



Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has donated Tk 901,636 to the Chief Adviser's Relief Fund in aid of the victims of cyclone Sidr. A cheque for the amount was handed over to National Sports Council Chairman and Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed at the Army Headquarters on Saturday.

BFF President SA Sultan Tito and acting general secretary Manzoor Hossain Malu, Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan of Mohamedan SC and Kazi Nabil Ahmed of Abahani Limited were present while the cheque was handed over to the NSC chairman.

The amount has been raised from "best of three football" matches played between the country's two soccer giants Mohammedan SC and Abahani Limited in the first week of this month at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. Dhaka Mohammedan SC clinched the title of the three-match charity football series beating their traditional rivals Abahani Limited by 2-1.

Bangladesh U-19 beat Sri Lanka U-19 by 44 runs

Hosts Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team took a 2-1 lead against Sri Lanka Under-19 team in the five-match one-day series beating the visitors by 44 runs in the 3rd one-day match at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium (SCS) in Bogra on Saturday.

Batting first after winning the toss, Bangladesh U-19 team scored 203 runs for all in 49.3 overs.

One-down Nadimuddin top scored 66 runs off 106 balls that featured six fours while Nasir Hossain made 41 off 67 balls with two fours.

Opener Ashraful Hossain 26, middle order Marshall Ayub 24 and Rony Talukder 18 also made useful contributions to take the team total past 200.

S Pathirana claimed four wickets for 43 runs while D Fernando, Peiris and Udayanga took two wickets apiece.

In reply, the tourists were all out for 159 in 45.3 overs in the face of some disciplined bowling by the hosts.

K Janith came up with team highest 47 runs off 69 balls with four boundaries while tail-ender Peiris scored 29 runs and Pathirana made 28.

Pacer Dollar Mahmud grabbed three wickets for 24 runs in seven overs while Nasir Hossain and KM Shakil took two wickets each.

Nasir Hossain, who scored 41 runs for Bangladesh U-19 team and took two wickets, was adjudged man of the match.

Earlier, the hosts made a good start in the series beating Sri Lanka Under-19 side by 13 runs in the first one-day match. Then the tourists made a comeback winning the 2nd one-day match by 14 runs, both at the SCS.

The two sides will play the 4th one-day match on Dec. 18 and the 5th match on Dec. 20 at the Narayanganj Osmani Stadium (NOS).

Rangamati clinch 2nd Inter-District Women's Football title



UNB, Dhaka



Rangamati DSA clinched the title of the 2nd Inter-District Women's Football Competition beating hosts Dhaka DSA by 2-0 goals in the final at the Dhanmondi Women's Sports Complex ground on Saturday.

Rokhsana Parvin scored the first goal in the 11th minute (1-0) while Suinu Pru Marma doubled the margin in the 58th minute (2-0).

After the final, Suinu Pru Marma of champion Rangamati team received the player of the tournament award while her teammate Mina got the player of the final award. Sukhi of Narayanganj DSA, who scored nine goals, bagged the highest scorer award.

LGRD Adviser Anwarul Iqbal was present at the closing ceremony as chief guest and later distributed the prizes.

Women and Children Affairs secretary Rokeya Sultana and Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) vice president Rafia Akhter Doly were present as special guests.

Bangladesh Rifles win the title of Victory Day Kabaddi

Bangladesh Rifles clinched the championship title of the Victory Day Kabaddi Competition when they defeated Bangladesh Army by 34-19 points with two lonas in the final at the Kabaddi Stadium on Saturday.

Maftun Haque of Bangladesh Rifles was adjudged the best player.

After the final match President of Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation and Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Noor Mohammad distributed the prizes among the winners as the chief guest while Director of Exim Bank Nazrul Islam Shawpan was present with him as the special guest.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation Md Nazrul Islam spoke at the prize-giving ceremony.
