Uraas Every year on the 19th and 20th Jilkad of the Islamic calendar the faithfuls and disciples celebrate the annual 'Uraas' (anniversary) of Hazrat Shahjalal (R), the patron saint of Sylhet. Accordingly, this year the two day long 'Uraas' was celebrated on the 30 th of November and 1st of December. On occasion of these 'Uraas' followers from all over Bangladesh arrive at the shrine of the Saint to pray and offer 'Niaz'. Many among them offer cattle and other food items for the preparation of the 'shirni' - a special dish that is served during this festivity. The celebrations begin with the ' Gilap' procession where the faithfuls cover the grave of the Saint with a new 'Gilap' or special decorated cloth used as a cover. This is followed by other activities and prayers. At night renowned 'Baul' or Sufi singers from all over the country perform religious songs. The ' Uraas' comes to an end with the offering of a final prayer called 'Akheri Monajat'. Photos: A. H. Arif Text: Humaira Fatima Photos & Text By DrikNEWS
