A tribunal here today sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for raping a teenaged girl in the district five years back.

Judge of the Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and

Child Repression AKM Sirajul Islam found the victim guilty of the charge and handed down the verdict. The convicts identified as Abul Hasem and Sirajul Islam, both of Gangopara village under Mohanpur upazila, were also fined Taka one lakh each. They are absconding since getting bail from the court.

According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the convicts forcibly raped the girl in a betel leaf field at the Gangopara village on the night on October 16, 2002. She was going to her grandmother's house at a nearby village.

A case was lodged with Mohanpur police station on the following day. Police after completing investigation pressed charges accusing them.

After examining the recorded depositions of seven prosecution witnesses, the tribunal pronounced the verdict.
