Jhalakati judges murder: Family members demand trial of godfathers of JMB killers

November 14, the day of brutal killing of two judges of Jhalakati district judge court in 2005, was observed and relatives of a victim demanded trial of the godfathers of JMB killers and investigation about JMB connection of Mayor Sarwar of Barisal City Corporation.

Religious programmes for the departed souls of the slain judges were arranged at family level at houses, cremation ground and graveyard in Barisal and Bhola.

Besides Annodaan and Kangali Bhoj (feeding the guest and poor) were arranged at paternal house of late Jagonnath Pandey in Padma village of Patharghata upazila under Barguna district. Pallabi Pandey Rita, the widow of killed Judge Jagonnath Pandey and an Officer of United Commercial Bank Barisal branch and Farzana Kanta, widow of killed judge Shahid Sohel Ahmed and an officer of the registrar office of Dhaka University, denying making any comments about that sad incident, said family members, relatives, neighbors and well-wishers attended these programmes.

However Mukul Mukherjee, a customs officer and father in law of Jagonnath Pandey, said that they were happy after the execution of the death sentences of the killer JMB leaders and activists.

Now we demand trial of the godfathers of those killers and probe against recently revealed facts of JMB connection with Barisal City Corporation Mayor Majibor Rahman Sarwar, he said.

Recently we visited Law Advisor Barrister Mainul Hosein, placed our demand', he added.

Shrestho Pandey Argho, 4, son of Jagonnath Pandey, is living with mother at maternal grandfather's house at Kashipur area of Barisal city and Ifty, 5, son of Shahid Sohel Ahmed, living with his mother in Dhaka.

Death sentences of six out of seven JMB killers and their top-most leaders have already been executed and death sentence of Arifur Rahman, another JMB activist connected with this killing and detained at Barguna jail, would be executed very soon, sources said.

Need for good coop between police and common people stressed

Md Asaduzzaman Mia, DIG Khulna Range said that there was a big gap between people's expectation from police and service rendered by them. Though we said police are friends to the people, still police cannot be the real friends to people. People also fear to go to thanas, DIG added.

He stressed to build up good cooperation between police and the common people for development of the nation.

One gets life for violating girl in Netrakona

A youth was sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a court here on Tuesday for kidnapping and violating a girl four years ago.

The convict was identified as Ramzan Ali, 25, son of Kashem Ali of Satpai in the district town.

District and Sessions Judge ASM Salauddin Khan delivered the judgment in a crowded courtroom on Tuesday.

The court also fined the convict Taka five thousand, in default, to suffer one year more in prison.

The prosecution story, in brief, is that Ramzan kidnapped Nasrin Begum, 14, daughter of Moulana Mohammad Yunus and student of Fazil class of Dugia Abbasia Madrasa on March 14, 2004 and violated her keeping in confinement in a house in the town.

After the abduction, Nasrin's father filed a case with Netrakona sadar thana against accusing Ramzan under the Child and women repression Act.

Police submitted chargesheet before the court against Ramzan.

After examining the witnesses and evidences the judge handed down the verdict.

World Diabetes Day observed in befitting mannar in Rangpur

The World Diabetes Day-2007 was observed in Rangpur and its adjoining northern districts in a befitting manner on Wednesday.

Rangpur Diabetic Samity (RDS) and District Administration jointly chalked out an elaborate programme to observe the occasion. The programme includes colourful rallies, discussion and cost- free treatment to a large number of the diabetic patients. Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Khondker Atiar Rahman led the rally that paraded the streets of the town. The rally over, a discussion meeting was organised on the premises of RDS office here.

Among others, Associate Professor of Rangpur Medical College and Hospital Dr Laik Ahmed Khan, president of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu, RDS executives, government officials and elite, addressed the discussion. The concerned district units of the Diabetic Samity in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Joypurhat and Naogaon and other adjoining districts of the region also chalked out similar programmes.

The speakers in the discussions said spreading of the disease to adults and babies could be controlled and the diabetic patients could lead normal life if massive public awareness were created about the disease in society. They also asked all to work unitedly in preventing the disease for ensuring sound health of everybody.

RAKUB to distribute Tk 1.50 cr agri-loan in Gaibandha

Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) will disburse agriculture loan amounting to Taka 1.50 crore among the farmers of the district for cultivation of different crops during the robi season.

The loan distribution was inaugurated at the RAKUB Gaibandha branch office on Wednesday.

Deputy General Manager Abdul Halim addressed the function as the chief guest while it was presided over by M. Shamsur Rahman, manager of the branch.

Among others, Mohammad Ali and Abdus Sattar of the bank also spoke on the occasion. On the inaugural day, a total of Taka seven lakh was distributed among 25 farmers. The loan will be utilised for producing potato, mustard and Boro paddy during the current season.

The loan will also be distributed by 23 other branches of RAKUB in the district.

56 alleged criminals held in Rajshahi

Police, in different anti-crime drives, arrested 56 alleged criminals, including one listed one, from different areas in city and nine upazilas of the district on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Police sources said, of the arrested, 27 were picked up from different places in the metropolis while 29 others, including the listed criminal, from nine upazilas of the district. Traffic police lodged 43 cases under motor vehicles Ordinance and seized two motorbikes without registration during the drives in the city during the period.

One arrested with shutter-gun in Benapole

Police arrested a person with a shutter-gun from Sadar upazila on Wednesday.

On secret information, police raided the house of Abdul Kader, 35, son of late Imam Ali of Naldanga Village and recovered the gun from under a bed. Police arrested Abdul Kader. A case was filed with concerned police station in this connection.

Kothin Chibar Dan festival begins in Bandarban

The 'Kothin Chibar Dan' festival of the Buddhist community started with the reciting Mongal Sutra and hoisting of national flag at Kalaghata Amrokanan Buddho Palli here this morning on Thursday. The sources said, preparation of programmes like dinner, sitting of Buddhist monk, religious meeting and performing other rituals.

Later, Sualok, Amtoli,Marmapara and Totchhonga para under Sadar upazila of the district observed the two-day long Kothin Chibar festival.

Kishoreganj BNP convener sent to jail hazat

Kishorganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday ordered to send Majibor Rahman Manju, former MP and Kishoreganj district BNP convener to jail hajat by rejecting his bail appeal.

Sources said, Taher Uddin Tahu, Chairman of Gurui Union of BNP Vice-President of Nikli Upazila was brutally killed in broad-day-light for political rivalry on October 10 in 2006 last.

Joyatsna Begum, wife of Taher Uddin filed a case with Bajitpur thana accusing 22 including MP Manju.

5 bandits arrested

JESSORE, Nov 17: Police arrested five robbers along with a firearm and ammunition from Bagdanga village on Jessore-Jhenidah road under Kotwali model thana early Wednesday. Police said acting on secret information that a gang of bandits was preparing to commit highway robbery they conducted the drive and arrested five of them along with a pipe-gun and two bullets. The arrested were identified as Abdul Quader, Ajad, Mohiuddin, Asad and Ohidur of the same village in Sadar Upazila. When produced the court sent them to jail hajat, reports UNB.



2 killed in road mishap

NOAKHALI, Nov 17: Two people were killed and five others injured in a fatal road accident on Begumganj-Laxmipur road at Baicharpool in Begumganj Upazila on Wednesday. The deceased were identified as tempo driver Khokan, 30, and helper Helal, 20. Police said the accident occurred at about 1PM when a Laxmipur-bound goods laden truck rammed a Chowmuhani bound three-wheeler tempo coming from opposite direction, killing the tempo driver and helper on the spot and injuring its five passengers. The injured were admitted to a local clinic. Police seized the truck but its driver and helper managed to flee. A case was filed, reports UNB.



12 cocktails recovered

PABNA, Nov 17: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members recovered 12 cocktails from inside a sack at Dapunia village in Sadar Upazila Tuesday afternoon. RAB sources said fisherman Mohiuddin found a sack while fishing in his pond at about 2:30 PM and informed the matter to RAB-12. Later, the elite force rushed to the scene and found the cocktails in the sack, reports UNB.
