ACC revives 1500 corruption cases: Hannan Shah, Ershad, Roushan, Oli Ahmed among the accused

There are the names of more than 150 VIP accused, including detained former prime ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina in the list of some 1,500 graft cases now lying with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The ACC has already finalized the list, and a cell has been opened at the Supreme Court to examine the cases. Apart from filing new cases, the ACC has taken an initiative to start the proceedings of some 2,500 old cases which remained pending with the previous commission.  |
US asks Pakistan to end emergency: Benazir to go ahead with pro-democracy march
Reuters, Islamabad Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto will defy President Pervez Musharraf and go ahead with a pro-democracy rally next week, an aide said on Saturday, as Washington called on Pakistan to end its state of emergency. A defiant Bhutto, who was kept under house arrest in Islamabad on Friday to prevent her from leading a protest in the adjoining garrison town of Rawalpindi, plans to travel by motorcade from Lahore to the capital on Tuesday. Police maintained a strong security presence at Bhutto's Islamabad residence early on Saturday, complete with barbed wire and concrete barriers, despite saying she was no longer under house arrest, a Reuters witness said.  |

Staff Reporter Different political parties, cultural and student organisations observed 'Shaheed Noor Hossain Day' yesterday with a due solemnity and honour. Top leaders of Awami League, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Gono Forum, and different cultural and student organisations placed wreaths at the Noor Hossain Square in the morning paying tribute to Noor Hossain. Noor Hossain was killed in police firing at Zero Point now Noor Hossain Square in the city on November 10, 1987 in a procession during the anti-Ershad movement. Since his depart Noor remained an inspiration for all who believe in democracy.  |
Separation of judiciary achieved due to congenial atmosphere: CJ BSS, Dhaka Chief Justice Md. Ruhul Amin on Saturday said, the separation of judiciary from the executive has been possible because of the present 'congenial atmosphere' in the country. "The Supreme Court continued its efforts to separate the judiciary from the administration, but without such a congenial atmosphere it would have not been so easy or even possible to accomplish the task," he said while speaking as the chief guest at the 10th founding anniversary of East West University (EWU) at Bangladesh-China Conference Center here.  |
No logic will remain logical if prices are not urgently contained The Advisory Committee on Law and Order at its meeting last week with the Adviser for Law and Information in the chair directed law enforcing agencies to remain alert so that prices of essentials do not go up due to law and order problems. The committee, according to press reports, ordered law enforcing agencies to monitor the prices of essentials commodities and keep the market stable and to remain alert about illegal collection of toll on essential goods. The meeting was informed that stock of fertiliser is sufficient in the country. Law enforcers were asked to monitor smooth distribution of fertiliser.  |
