Shaheed Noor Hossain Day, commemorating the martyrdom of Noor Hossain on this day in 1987 during the mass struggle against the autocratic regime of HM Ershad will be observed in the country in a befitting manner today.

Jubo League leader Noor Hossain was shot dead at the Zero Point area in the city when he was leading a procession inscribed with 'Let democracy be free' on his bare chest and 'Destroy the autocrat' on his back.

His martyrdom accelerated the movement, which turned into a mass upsurge in 1990 and forced the autocratic Ershad regime to quit power.

Different socio-political organisations have chalked out programmes to observe the day. The programme includes placing wreaths at the Noor Hossain Square and his grave, Quran khwani and doa mahfil.

Acting president of Awami League Zillur Rahman in a message on this day called upon all to work together to materialise the dreams of Shaheed Noor Hossain by building a prosperous country.

Social organisation Seba will organise a daylong free treatment for poor at its Free School Street office tomorrow marking the day.

Besides, floral wreaths will be placed at the grave of Noor Hossain at Jurain graveyard here.
