Pavarana Purnima is a Buddhist festival celebrated on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month. It heralds the conclusion of 'Barsha Brata' (Rain's Retreat), i.e. end of the rainy season. On this day, while lay people visit the local monasteries to make special offerings resident monks (Bhikkhu) within monasteries invite and reprimand (with love and compassion) one another and also discuss aspects of monastic life. The ceremony promotes unity and betterment of the community. The day also marks Buddha's return after his three months stay in the Tavatimsa heaven. To honor Lord Buddha and all the departed souls, devotees light up the sky with 'fanushes' (hot air balloons).
