Judiciary gets independence: Chief Adviser inaugurates epoch-making event today

The judiciary is being separated from the executive branch of the government today, heralding a new era of the rule of law with complete independence of the system of dispensation of justice in the country.
Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the system formally today (Thursday) at a ceremony of Dhaka District Judicial Magistracy and Dhaka Metropolitan Magistracy at China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre in the city.
Chief Justice Md Ruhul Amin will attend the function as special guest, while Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Mainul Hosein will preside over the function.

Reformists team led by Gen Mahbub meets CEC: BNP factions vie for EC letter

Leaders of both the factions of the BNP yesterday asked the Election Commission to invite their respective groups in the dialogue on electoral reforms, which is scheduled for November 22.
Representatives of the BNP Standing Committee yesterday requested the Election Commission to invite the party committee led by Acting Chairman M Saifur Rahman in the ongoing dialogue on electoral reforms.
A three-member delegation led by Standing Committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda at the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat and made the request.

Last year Bangladesh 10th from bottom in GCI: Entrepreneurs facing now less hassles

Position of Bangladesh in the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) alarmingly slid down by 15 places in 2007 compared to that of 2006.
This year, Bangladesh was ranked 107 out of 131 countries in the GCI report prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF), which was 92 out of 125 countries last year. The ranking was made according to the last year's performance of the economy.
The report was simultaneously released across the world yesterday. Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) did released it in Bangladesh at a press conference in Dhaka.

Applicants should provide correct information for getting US visas

The Chief of Consular Section of American Embassy in Dhaka, Wednesday laid emphasis on providing correct information by individuals for being considered as strong candidates for getting US visas.
"The officials of the US Embassy are working hard to ensure the best services to those seeking visas for visiting the United States of America and for immigration. I would like to call upon the visa-seekers to ensure that correct information along with easily reachable mailing address are provided in the application," Elizabeth P Gourlay, Chief of Consular Section of the US Embassy in Dhaka said.

Paban, 4 others taken on remand

Former Chief Whip, Khandaker Delwar Hossain's son Khandaker Akhter Hamid alias Paban and four others were yesterday placed on a two-day remand in an arms case.
Pallabi Thana Police of the city arrested them Tuesday.
Other accused are: Md Anwar Hossain, son of Md Jabbar Majhi, Md Masud Ali alias Apu, son of late Mamataj Uddin and Delwar Hossain alias Ratan, son of Md Al-Islam and Nahid alias Mota Nahid, son of GM Sayed.
Pallabi Thana Police produced the accused before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court and sought a seven-day remand.
