Schoolboy drowns in Thakurgaon

Thakurgaon, Oct 26: A schoolboy drowned in a water body in Ranishankoil upazila headquarters here Thursday.The dead was identified as Shourav, 7, son of Mizanur Rahman. Family sources said when Shourav was bathing in the historically famous Khunia Dighi of the area he suddenly slipped deep into it and drowned. Later, local people recovered the body. The tragic death news cast a deep gloom over the area, reports UNB.



Elephant found dead in Sherpur

Sherpur, Oct 26: A wild elephant was found dead at Katabari Daudhara area in Nalitabari upazila in the district Friday. Local people found the dead body of the 10-feet high elephant in a paddy field. They said herds of elephants came from India through the border Thursday night and destroyed paddy of vast tracts of land. The elephant might have been electrocuted when it came in contact with electrified fence, police said. Local farmers use electrified fence to save their crops from the elephant. The Forest Department will do postmortem of the elephant, sources said, reports UNB.



Relief distributed

Lalmonirhat, Oct 26: As part of post-flood rehabilitation programme Tk 20 lakh in cash were distributed among 268 flood victims of Kaliganj upazila headquarters and Chaparhat centre Thursday. Besides, food relief given by the Saudi government was also distributed among 650 flood-affected families, said an official release. Director General of Relief and Rehabilitation Directorate Sadruddin Ahmed visited the flood affected areas and distributed relief items. He also held a meeting with local administration to face Monga situation. Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Director of Agricultural Extension Department and district level officials of WDB, Roads & Highways Department, LGED and DPHE were present in the meeting, reports UNB.



615 tubewells to be installed in Pirojpur

Pirojpur, Oct 26: Some 615 hand driven tubewells will be installed in four upazilas of the district in the current fiscal year. Of the total, 25 tubewells will be set up in Sadar upazila, 261 in Sarupkati, 109 in Bhandaria and 220 in Mothbaria upazilas. Besides, 179 deep tube wells will also be installed in the district with a view to ensure supply of drinking water among the rural people, reports UNB.



Body recovered

Mymensingh, oct 26: Body of a farmer was recovered from a pond at Ojan Barera village on the outskirts of the district town Thursday. Police said Abul Kalm remained missing since Wednesday and his relatives found the body in the pond of the area after a hectic search. Police suspected that his rivals might have killed him and then threw the body into the pond. A case was filed, reports UNB.



Two killed in road accidents

Satkhira, Oct 26: Two people were killed in two separate road accidents in the district Thursday. Police said a Munshiganj bound truck hit a pick up van at Patlia crossing in Devhata upazila on Satkhira-Munshiganj road Wednesday night, leaving Milon critically injured. He was rushed to the local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. Besides, another pick up van ran over bicyclist Abul Sarder at Kulia crossing on the same road on Thursday. He died on the way to hospital. Local people seized the van. Separate cases were filed, relating to this.
