Journo gets 5-year RI for extortion in Bagerhat

A court has sentenced a local journalist to five years rigorous imprisonment for realising extortion from a businessman on August this year.

The convict was identified as Sheikh Shawkat Ali Shimul, district correspondent of the daily Bhorer Kagoj and general secretary of local journalist union.

The court also fined him Taka 10,000, in default to suffer six more months in prison. Two other accused in the case were acquitted as charges against them could not be proved. The judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal of Bagerhat Shoroj Kumar Nath delivered the verdict in presence of the convict on Wednesday.
