Call to create working environment for sculptors

Gold medallist international sculptor Rasha, who also has achieved National Award three times, yesterday urged the present Caretaker Government to take necessary steps for the furtherance exploration of art, including sculpture, and national heritage through creating working environment for the sculptors.

At a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Rasha, who has also been leading several social, environmental and national movements for the last 36 years, congratulated the present government and said, "This is the time to consider his request for the excellence of sculpture art, as the government is non-political and impartial in nature."

"None of the political governments in the past evaluated the quality of persons due to their political weakness and vindictive mentalities", sculptor Rasha, who is also a successful Yogi, alleged and said, "Since the '1/11', a moral drive has been launched which, I think, would evaluate the quality and meritorious persons in the art sector of the country also."

Sculptor Rasha also urged the government to consider his recommendations at the request of the present Director General of the Shilpa-Kala Accademy for the improvement of the national art and heritage.

Kazi Zafar condoles death of Laila Badrul

Former Prime Minister Kazi Jafar Ahmed expressed his deep shock in a condolence message at the death of Begum Laila Badrul, wife of AK Badrul Haque, justice of the Supreme Court and former student leader of the 60's.

In his message, he said deceased was a patriotic and socially aware.

He prayed for the salvation of her departed soul.

Farmer killed in Barguna

Police recovered a dead body of a farmer from Charakgachhia village under Sadar upazila of the district on Thursday.

He was identified as Saheb Ali, 25.

The police said he was strangulated to death while returning home after watching a movie at a video club at Chargacchia Bazar, leaving his dead body on the wayside by the assailants.

97 arrested in Rajshahi

The police in different anti-crime drives arrested 97 alleged criminals, including a drug- trafficker, from different areas in the city and nine upazilas of the district on Thursday and Friday.

Of them 53 people were rounded up from the metropolis while 44 others from nine upazilas of the district.

Police seized 20 litres of country-made liquor during two separate raids in Charghat upazila and nabbed the identified drug-trafficker-Abdul Quader, 45.

The traffic police also lodged 36 cases under motor vehicles ordinance and seized two motorbikes for plying those on the streets without valid documents.

Body found in C'nawabganj

The police recovered a dead body from a pond at Jamtala Digha under Jhilim union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila on Friday.

He was identified as Sirajul Islam Montu, 70, of Namosankerbati Maori under the municipality.

Being informed, police recovered the body at around 3 AM. He was mentally sick and went out of home on October 20, family sources said.

A case was filed with Sadar thana in this connection.

Voter listing from Nov-4 in Natore

Work for voter list with photographs and national ID cards is all set to begin in Natore on Nov 4 for which appointment of people and their training has begun.

District election commission sources said work for collection of data on voters from households will begin on Nov 4 while taking of photographs and data entry work will begin on Nov 11.

The process for appointment of 84 assistant registration officers, 925 supervisors and 3833 information collectors have been completed. Their training under the supervision of the district election office will be held from Oct 31 and continue till Nov 2.

The appointment of data entry operators under the supervision of the army, administration, directorate of youth development and district election commission was scheduled to be completed by Saturday.

A rally under the arrangement of the district administration and the municipality to make people aware of the voter registration would be held in the town on Nov 1, election commission sources said.

The information gathered from households by the supervisors will be sorted out on Nov 10. Under supervision of the army, data entry and taking of photographs will be held in at least 500 spots in the six upazilas of the district.

The people, who had been left out of the electoral roll, would be able to register themselves as voters during the period. The work for preparation of voter list and national ID cards is expected to be completed by May 31 next year, the sources said.
