News Briefs Young girl commits suicide in Sylhet SYLHET, Oct 24: A young girl allegedly committed suicide by taking poison at Raighar village in Kanaighat Upazila here on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Archana Rani, 22, daughter of late Sitesh Chandra Das of Alipur village in Sadar Upazila of Moulvibazar district. Family sources said, Archana, who was living in the house of her sister at Raighar since long, took her life taking poison in her room in the evening when other members of the house went to visit a nearby Puja Mandap, reports UNB. Two firearms recovered BAGERHAT, Oct 24: Criminal Investigation Department (CID) police recovered two pipe guns from Sonatala area on the outskirts of the district town early on Saturday. Acting on tip-off that a gang of terrorists gathered in the area to commit a crime a team of CID police gheraoed the area at 4:30 AM. But sensing their presence the miscreants fled the scene leaving the firearms behind. The seized firearms were later handed over to the Sadar Police Station. A case was filed, reports UNB. Two killed in Comilla road mishap COMILLA, Oct 24: Two people, including a truck driver, were killed in a tragic road accident on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Jhinglatoli in Daudkandi Upazila on Sunday early morning. Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at about 5 AM when the iron rod loaded Daudkandi bound truck from Chittagong plunged into a roadside ditch, killing its driver Bhagyakul Chakma and passenger Saiful on the spot. Police recovered their bodies and sent those to local hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB. Valuables looted GAZIPUR, Oct 24: Armed robbers hacked a house owner to death and looted cash and valuables worth about Tk 2 lakh from his house at Ghorshas village in Kapasia Upazila early on Saturday. The dead was identified as Moniruddin, 35. Neighbors said 5/6 robbers entered the house of Moniruddin late at night and looted Tk 60,000 in cash and other valuables at gunpoint. At one stage, the robbers stabbed Moniruddin indiscriminately as he tried to resist them, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to the nearby Monohardi Upazila Health Complex of Narsingdi district and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the morning. A case was filed with the police, reports UNB. Works on preparing voters' list BANDERBAN, Oct 24: Works on preparing voters' list with photograph and ID card will begin in the district on Monday. The work will formally begin with enlisting the name of Deputy Commissioner M Abdul Majid Shah Akand at 9 AM. Later, the information collectors will collect information through door-to-door visit. In the first phase, the work will begin in Sadar Upazila and Poura area, officials said, reports UNB. Six hurt in road mishap BARISAL, Oct 24: Six people were injured in separate road accidents in Hizla and Mehediganj Upazilas of the district on Saturday. In Hizla, the mishap occurred at about 12:45 PM when a Hizla river port-bound three-wheeler tempo collided with another tempo coming from opposite direction at Khunna area injuring four passengers of the two The injured Hanif Khan, Shamsu Molla, Mizanur Rahman and Hannan Hawladar were admitted to the local hospital. In Mehediganj, two bicycle riders were critically injured when a tempo rammed their vehicle near Patarhat area in the afternoon. The injured identified as Riaz and Jahed were admitted to the local Upazila Health Complex, reports UNB.
